Two members sharing one PC

My wife seems to have decided that if you can't beat them, join them.  Them being me, obviously! Laughing

She would like to join Chess.com in due course, but I thought I would ask if this causes any problems, since we will be both be using the same computer and multiple accounts are not allowed!

Thanks.

Go ahead! Drop oneself! Or both just play!

Just do not argue on the common kitchen!

Or someone will call on your family, for public disturbance of chess peace!

I have a similar situation and I have been doing it successfully for about one month now. So I think it should be alright for you as well.

Yes, I agree with knightking.  It's quite alright to have two separate users on the same PC.  The policy regarding multiple accounts relates to a single user having two or more accounts, so you're fine.  Here's the link to where this rule is stated: (5th rule from the top)

http://www.chess.com/legal.html#rules

Just make sure she doesn't get banned, as this will block the IP address of your computer, thus not allowing you to play Smile

Thanks everyone.  I guess my point is that I'm not sure how Chess.com would know the difference between one user having multiple accounts and more than one user (say family members) who use the same pc, and so show up as having the same IP address.

SonofPearl, I don't know, but I know you will need to use separate e-mail addresses (Erik pointed this out to a father-daughter team who signed up on here).

SonofPearl
Thanks likesforests.  I hadn't thought of that. Smile

Yes, you can have a family member join and use the site from the same computer. It will not be a problem at all. The only reason we use IP checks sometimes are to weed out players who intentionally make multiple accounts and then play against themselves to abuse the ratings. So no worries in your case.

What if people sharing the same computer play against each other, in friendly games as well as tournaments? Would that come under suspicion?
Patzer24
That is ok also so long as one side is not intentionally losing the game to manipulate the ratings.

This is a funny example.  Here in Scotland we have the best female British player, GM Keti Arakhamia Grant. Her husband also plays, Mr Jonathan Grant but she is clearly much stronger. Her husband is still around the 2350 Fide mark and has been Scottish Champion before (so not exactly a noob either! lol) but she is about 2550 Fide.  I can't imagine what it would be like being 2350 at Chess and having to tell your friends etc that your wife is a better player lol.

Ha - good example! I'm a long way short of even Mr Grant's strength!
