Does this happen every time you type something?
Can you determine which window got the focus?
No. About one time in ten.
I think google chrome and chess.com probably still have focus, just not the chat textbox; and my keystrokes just get thrown away.

It could be a dodgy mouse - or a similar device. If you were to explicitly click on a mouse button in between typing (and the cursor was outside the text box) -focus would be taken away from the text box. If a spurious mouse move or click gets detected, this would explain loss of focus. Could you try (as an experiment) using an alternative mouse ?
It's more likely to be some other application that is stealing focus. There's a registry setting ForegroundLockTimeout that's supposed to prevent it. It can be set using TweakUI or directly via a .BAT file. However, according to Google, other applications (or web code in a browser window) can change the setting and then steal focus.
There is a problem with typing in the chat window. I click on it so it gets the focus, then I start typing. The first character or few characters appear, but then it seems to lose focus; the next characters I type are lost, and I have to click in it again to continue.
I am using Chrome 5.0.375.99 on Windows XP Pro.
