What is the rules around multiple accounts?

I had always thought unless you were a mod or a streamer etc, you weren't allowed more than one account.

But i've been seeing multiple people using multiple accounts and they aren't getting their accounts closed, or they're making posts about it.

So I just want a mod to confirm what exactly are the rules specifically around having multiple accounts? Please someone clear this up

oPhilipz

You can't have multiple accounts. Also, if you have reason to believe someone is breaking the rules you can report their account.

That didn't answer my question. Those links are about Fair play. it's not about having multiple accounts in general.

oPhilipz

The first link provided clearly answers your question if multiple accounts are allowed on chess.com.

"no... we do not allow the use of multiple accounts"

StumpyBlitzer

Multiple accounts are not allowed, unless agreed by the site which generally is streamers, mods.

If you see people with multiple accounts please report them.

So the people that say they have multiple accounts because of family members are in the wrong as well right?

No. Family members in the same household should have their own accounts and that is required if more than one family member wants to play on site. However, they should not play rated games against each other. They should also not share those accounts.

Right..

That's what I'm asking when im saying multiple accounts. So a household can have multiple accounts as long as they don't play against each other?

What he is saying is that if there is four members in your family, each one can have their own account.

Correct.

Also, they should be sure not to share login details so no one else in the household can use another member's account.

So riddle me this.

How on earth are you supposed to be able to tell if two accounts with the same IP are being used by 2 different people or if its 1 person using both?

That's not always a clear case, but accounts have been closed when there is the appearance that one person is using more than one of the accounts.

Now if you want to make another account for a family member, can u just do it? or do you have to make a ticket asking first?

Other than parents making accounts for children, people should be making their own accounts.

From abusers and kids I've seen, pretty sure you can have multiple accounts without asking...

... but if for any reason someone checks your account, and sees multiple on the same IP (let's say you're often rude to your opponents so you tend to generate reports), you risk having your accounts closed temporarily while you contact support and explain.

TacitusSovetsky

I myself had 2 accounts, but the newer one was reported as a spam account, before I could even use it.

Nigel Short GM  or Honestgirl GM ….It’s just a jumbling of letters to play multiple accounts here as male or female 😳😳

IP address is not a good indicator of multiple accounts. A bunch of people play from cafes, coffee shops, dorm rooms that are all NATd behind the same IP address. It requires additional fingerprinting which chess.com deploys if I had to guess.

Honestly, is this really an issue anyways?

I’m sure chess.com would love everyone to have $99/yr paid memberships. I can see closing sus’ free accounts though.

Well, a funny thing happened to me. I played one game which I feel the player wasn't aroung my rating (aroung 1300 in blitz). After the game is over, I reported him for cheating, said that to him and blocked. A few hours later I received a message from another account with the player bragging that he beat me with a secondary account and calling me coward for blocking him. That account was aroung 1600 in blitz.
Everything against the rules, according to the links posted here.
So I sent a message to support, and, to my surprise, the staff said to me that is allowed having multiple accounts. So I replied back saying that's not what says in those links. I waiting for the reply. ...

https://support.chess.com/article/596-can-i-have-multiple-accounts was updated a few months ago to allow multiple accounts if approved.
