What's wrong with chess.com's server?

Recently when I am playing a game, especially a 4pc game, the server always loses connection for several minutes, ending in me losing the whole game for forfeit on time. These days this problem becomes so severe that I cannot even finish a game normally. I just want to know why things happen like that,. Whether it's a server's problem or local web's? And how can I solve it? Thanks for answering.

I don't think anyone knows for sure.  We do know that membership has at least doubled and that's put a strain on the servers.  We also know that internet traffic everywhere is up and that can also cause problems.  There are a few things you can do on your end though.  Worth checking out anyway...

Summer vacation may be a reason for doubled membership so it becomes unsurprising that servers don't function as usual. I've tried some of methods from your link but it still seems to be less-effective. Maybe the only thing I can do is to wait till the end of summer vacation——end of Aug. or beginning of Spet. , before me coming back to start a game. Thank you baddogno.

Sorry I couldn't help more.  Pretty sure I read something about external websites being filtered by your government which also slows everything down.  Alas I don't have a source or a link....Anyone know more about that?

Whenever I try to go back to previous move and play another move, it says that i can't go to the previous move.

It's actually not summertime that's causing this. If I'm not mistaken, it's a combination of COVID and the Queen's Gambit! (Well, mostly COVID wink.png ).

I don't believe that there is a true solution to this problem. I guess some games are just really laggy, while others aren't. Maybe there are some days when the server is more glitchy? Hope someone else knows how to help you, my apologies!

Playing with friend is not possible. Match starts with pieces already taken.

This is really disappointing and pretty much unacceptable when you’re a paid up member. Server connection today has been very poor (my connection is excellent).. a really good game where I was ahead collapsed and I was first told the other player had won..then the game mysteriously reappeared! It indicated the other player was about to auto resign  and when the clock ran out..nothing happened!! After a further 10 minutes or so an abandoned game was declared…chaos 😒😒😒😡

The site is experiencing very high loads, traffic doubling in a couple of weeks and being sustained during peak times. Staff are actively working on optimizations and capacity increases to alleviate issues, handle current load, and be ready for further growth.

That's why I decided not to purchase any premium on this website. I'm still a free-of-charge player today.

I am very frustrated with chess.com servers lately. Several connection drops each game. End up losing some games because of abandonment. Worst of all though is the game timer on a blitz game, it always ends up penalizing me. I can play my first 10 moves in a few seconds of real time, even some pre-moves included, but my clock will have MANY seconds deducted regardless, in favor of my opponent. Lose many games on time even though I play quicker than my opponent. Not a happy member. Cancelled my subscription. Wish I could get my money back. Lichess is working 100% and that’s free.

Lag can happen for many reasons. For some things under your control check out:

The link with the tips says maybe you need to go buy a faster computer. Maybe! Also it might be time to buy a 56k modem!

Having the same problem with 5 minute games. Does seem that time of day comes into the equation but unfortunately it appears to be worse in evenings (UK).

Unplayable at the momment

As far as I'm aware there haven't been any major issues today.

Just had it again. Sometimes during the game but it always appears to happen in the dieing minute or so of the game.

Is there extra processing going on during the end game?

OK

Changed Board

Switched off Analysis

Appears to be much better, will have to see rest of the week

Okay, the server ate not only my live chess elo but also puzzle battle elo now. And it even didn't have an entrance for report. What should I say? lol
