10 ¦ 5 Option

Please can we have a 10 ¦ 5 option? I am sick of losing 10-minute games on time when a queen up, and the next available limit is 15 ¦ 10 which requires a serious investment of time and effort.

How long the 15 | 10 games typically last?

I’m thinking of switching due to issues with time management… 🤦‍♂️
FrogCDE

I played a 15 | 10 game yesterday that was about 45 minutes - more of a commitment than I wanted.  I'm moving to Lichess.

Just realized we can create a custom match. So I’m going to try 10 | 10 and hopefully it doesn’t take too long to find a game.

The FIDE standards are 15|10, 5|3, 3|2

10 | <value> seek can be created by custom match.

Cessard

Pretty sure you can just go to custom match and seek 10 | 5 although it can take more time to find a match as that's not a default time control.

FrogCDE

OK, I've tried custom games now. (Couldn't see how they worked before.) It looks as if they get round the problem of finding opponents by waiving the rule about having to be within 200 rating points - I've just beaten an opponent rated 500 points below me. Still, at least it does my ego good after some bruising defeats recently!

Please would someone explain what 10/5 means. I have just played a game and had more time at the end than when I started. I am confused

10 minutes to start with and 5 seconds extra per move.

Thanks tygxc

I'm now playing 10 | 5 games regularly on Lichess. Though it is possible on chess.com, it seems a little-used option here, and I found I was only getting much weaker opponents. On Lichess I get quickly paired with an opponent of similar strength, and the difference in my performance has been striking. Knowing that I won't be timed out has done wonders for my confidence, and the whole experience is enjoyable now, whereas I was finding losing on time in game after game incredibly frustrating. Especially against those opponents who play on a queen down in the hope that your clock will run down before you mate them.

10 0 is most popular apparently. I do want a 10 5 option too. They would swap it for 30 on the front row.

10 minutes at the start of the game, and after each move, 5 seconds is added

OP;

There is the option in Custom time controls

Custom seeks are nice, but the quickest way to get a game is to enter the 10/0 pool.

So, I wish it would have some increment, even just 1 second (though I'd prefer 2). It wouldn't extend the game very much, on a relative basis, and it's a pity for such games to be decided by dirty flagging. (I do it myself, of course, since that's the game, but I honestly don't take much satisfaction in doing so, and I enjoy winning that way far, far less than I dislike losing in the same way.)

Yes, would love a 10+5 as a *default* option.

AunTheKnight

Agreed!

Elbow_Jobertski

10/0 is a good default. When people stumble in here and try internet chess for the first time 10/0 is a good starter level because it is finite, keeps things moving, yet long enough to where they can stop to think for a few seconds. Part of why chess.com is unlikely to make 10/5 a default is because they have an interest in keeping that 10/0 pool liquid so people who like it can get quick matchups.

It's a great time control for casual players interested in having a bit of time to think but not have the game take too long. Especially those that can invest 20 minutes to a game but not a game that could push past 30 if a game takes 60 moves or more.

As others have said many times on these forums: 10/5 really doesn't accomplish anything, either. You already have 5/5 and 15/10. What you really want is a 30+30 pool or something similar, with a classical rating on here. Playing 10/5 isn't really the kind of time control that's helping people seriously improve.

I find it ironic that you attack people who spend time playing chess, and then you complain about people not wanting to improve and playing speed chess.
