Comfortable Chess Time

what is your usual time limit you put on the clocks when you play chess that you feel most comfortable with and gives you enough time to think with out feeling rushed? Generally i prefer to have about 10 - 15 minutes which i usually more than enough which gives me extra time incase if im playing with someone around the same skill level as me and the match appears to be going nowhere.

If there is a longner time limit such as 30 minutes per game it usually takes me 20

minutes to finish a game. At the chess club where clocks are optional games last about 40 minutes unless there are long endings. It appears that 20 minutes is an optimal time for most games.  If there is a position with a difficult decision it doesn't take too long to decide that there are no preferences of choice. Other criteria may come into play such as whether to end with a knight or a bishop.

i see i usually like to have a bit of left over time but 20 does seem very optimal. most times i like to end with a bishop but there are some cases where i need a knight instead

I like a longer game.  Something like 20/10 or 30/10 does me very well.  I'm not particularly old, but I have a problem thinking really fast and making decent moves.

I prefer chess. Cool

same even though i can do it fas i like it nice and slow which is ok in chess. normally i like to have 2 hours for each side like in a tournament. one time i actually spent about an hour on a game that i managed to checkmate in only 16 moves

For casual OTB games, we usually set our clocks to 40 mins per side with a 10 second delay.

I really dislike quick chess.  There's too much time pressure for me. My favorite is game in 90.  That moves the game along but gives you time to puzzle out a complex position.

GenocidalWar

long games are my faves too. and 90 is a pretty good time limit also. im not so sure how those people that play bullet chess do it

GenocidalWar

oh ok yeah generally if you do that on live the opponent usually ditches

GenocidalWar

true but i still would want to play a bit

GenocidalWar

oh i see that happened to me alot when i did live

 online and OTB.

If you are averaging 8 to 16 mins per move otb you would lose all your games on time. Surprised

TheOldReb

There are several otb time controls I like/prefer. I like 40/90 and then G/30 . I also like G/2hours  and  G/90 but with 30 sec increments. These are my favorite classic chess time controls.....

that might be true reb especially on live chess but on OTB he may be referring to a casual game without a clock so usually there is no time limit and you could take that much time but i would imagine the opponent would have to be very patient. but what i like about online chess is you can take a really long time thinking about a move
