Aren't you the guy who started the 'Erik's Immaturity' thread? Nice way to treat a friend. Also you're pretty lucky to still have him as a friend.

Please, oh please don't block me for this.  Anything but that!

I usually play bullet chess, and when games can be decided in a second or two, the adrenaline really starts flowing through both players.

So no matter how angry I am that my opponent checked me 5+ in a row, instead of all the nasty things I could type, I type gg.

I type it win or lose, and it means to me exactly what it stands for "good game".

The real meaning of a word means nothing though. If it is used around a touchy subject, it will always have to be changed as people get offended by it. From mentally retarded to autistic, or short to vertically changelled, cripple to physically disabled, shell shock to combat stress reaction.

People love to find something that "offends" them.

Here's a link to George Carlin on euphemisms. He talks all about it and he's hilarious.

I can't understand how people would ever take offense to it though. I have opponents start swearing at me and saying I got lucky after many wins, and I have people tell me it wasn't a good game because they didn't win. People will often reply "thanks" after I say "gg" when they win. I've had someone about 400 rating ahead of me count off everytime he won (8-1, 9-1, etc.)

I love to play chess and if you would like to turn my gg into something offensive, then go ahead. It won't hurt my feelings.

Campione

I normally only say gg or well played if I mean it. If I don't think my opponent played well relative to his rating, I think thanks for the game is more appropriate.

gg is arrogance

Your particular interpretation of a perfectly innocent parting gesture may not represent the truth.

I say "gg" when a well contested encounter has finished, regardless of result.

I'll tell all my opponents good luck at the start of a game, and the majority of them gg afterwards. And most of the time, I legitmately mean it too :). If I blundered and ruined what was an otherwise very good game, I'll say gg, then apologize for my blunder marring the finish. If the game was decided by my opponent's blunder, I won't say anything at all. *Shrugs* If someone wants to think that my genuine respect is a form of secret condesention and arrogance, I guess all I have to say is "good job", you cracked the code ;)

same...when i use to play tournaments, or live chess in general, i always finished the game with a handshake and "good game" win lose or draw...i dont know about the rest of the world but in America were are trained to acknowledge our opponent after a contest with "good game" from a young age...anyone whos ever played any sport as a child is made to say good game and shake hands with the opposition, win or lose (not many draws in other sports). you may take it as arrogance but i assume most of the time its a learned response to finishing a contest..anyway gg

Cystem_Phailure

I usually type "thanks for the game" or "thanks for playing" after a win, but once in a while also "gg".  If some jerk insists on misinterpreting any of those as an intended insult, that's his problem.  I'm not responsible for people with chips on their shoulders who walk around looking for things to complain about.

I think my most common comment I type after I lose is "thanks for the lesson", although if the person never responded to my initial greeting I don't bother typing anything.

When I feel the compelling desire to make it known that I believe the game I just played was an entertaining, challenging, and enjoyable game in which both my opponent and I played extremely well and there was one single mistake made that allowed one player to triumph over the other, then usually I don't feel that a simple "gg" is enough. I make the effort to make a conversation with my opponent about stuff that happened, compliment some good moves he/she made, and maybe even ask some questions about certain moves that seemed strange to me. I've made friends in such conversations. The point I'm trying to make is, if it really was a gg, then saying a mere "gg" isn't good enough, at least for me.

I consulted my girlfriend, whose opinion is that "good game" is perfectly fine, but "good game, hahahahahahaha" is not. Apparently then "good sex, hahahahahahaha" isn't quite the compliment I thought it was.

If you blundered away a game, it might be arrogance, but if it was hard fought, what he said makes sense.

I can also assume that you're saying "kthxbai :)" out of arrogance. But maybe you are not, how can I know? Maybe you're saying Okay, thank you for reading, goodbye and have a good day. And I think you really are saying that.

But I do agree with you, sometimes it really means that. I know after beating a annoying opponent, or someone who is some sort or rival or we're talking trash or something like that I used to say stuff like that, with that meaning, too. So I get what you're saying.

It just annoys me when people say "gg" after some stupid game, like for example: I loose to a mouse slip (sometimes it's a gg anyway!) or I had a easy (or not so easy) win, or at least a advantage like one pawn or two pawns, and I make a stupid blunder and I loose and after that I hear: "gg". Like the other person doesn't understand anything at all about chess... But even so, nothing to worry about IMO, winning or loosing, doesn't matter.

Worse is people letting their clock run out or people who accept your seeks and abort, sometimes several times in a row.

i just wanted to post this here as this is a prime example of the bull im talking about: so i played this 1500 in a 10 0 game a few minutes ago - im rated about 1250 - and i completely outplayed him. he blundered a piece, and then the game after the 16th move. we played over 60 more moves after that after he wouldn't resign, and after playing into extream time pressure like the fool i am i only had less then a second to mate his lone king. anyway, I failed and because of the 50 move rule, it was declared an automatic draw. now, im thinking to myself omg, but i wanted to ask him about the 16th move he made, Rc1. i asked him about the move d5, the only move. first thing he said to me: gg. i asked him again after he wanted a rematch, and then said, 'waht i dunno', like ' i dont care'. i mean if it was such a good game, why cant you even answer a simple question about the key moment in the game. then he went on jibin me about losing on time, not even knowing waht the 50 move rule was, and wanted a rematch to regain the 5 points he lost due to drawing the game. if you dont call this ignorance, i dont know what is. dont dare tell me that 'gg' is a 'polite' term used to whatever the hell you say it does. i spit on gg.

gg should be shot be shot and burned. I can't stand the dreadful sight of it. When I see it, the acrid smell of despair fills my nostrils. I can't breath.  I sputter and choke in a fit of utter hopelessness. The hopelessness turns to anger, which in turn becomes rage. It boils and burns and builds up inside me, becoming a colossal cloud which looms dark and black all around me. It continues to grow; an awful monstrosity over which I no longer have any control, making me feel small and minute inside my own body. I am a mere mortal trapped inside a turbulent cesspool of infinite rage and intermittent despair.
