How can I start a game from phone to phone?

Your friend should be able to check his email on his iPhone.
Yeah, he can. But he couldn't get the game to pull up on his phone. I think he needs to figure it out or re-install the application.
Also: are there no push notifications? No in-game chat? Those would make this application WAY better on the smart-phones.

Also are there no notifications to him when I make a move? I have to e-mail him to tell him it's his turn? That doesn't sound right to me...again this is all on mobile-to-mobile play.

You can play live games with your friend with your iphone app if you really wanted to eliminate all the back and forth messages. Otherwise, yes you can turn on notifications which will display a message when its your turn to play. Your friend may have his notifications turned off on his phone.

Thank you for all the info, everyone. However, on my iPhone I see no way of turning on notifications (push notifications). The only way for me to see if it's my turn is to open up the application and check the game. It seems really silly to me that it would not have push notifications...so here's my final question I guess: where on the application for my iPhone can I turn on push notifications? This means that even if the application is closed I'll get an alert that pops up on my phone telling me it's my turn. I can't see that option anywhere.

Thanks for the help. I already had those all on, but I still am not getting push notifiations. I'm going to try to uninstall and reinstall the application. Also, my iPhone is an older model (3G) and it sucks. So perhaps it's because it's older. And it's not jailbroken, either.
Worst case scenario I just check my e-mails. No big deal. I appreciate everyone's comments!
I linked up with my buddy and when I sent him an invite he only gets the invite in his e-mail. How can I send a game invite so that he gets a message on his iPhone so he can simply jump into the game on his iPhone, instead of having to get into his e-mail and play it on his computer?
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!
