How does time actually work?

I just finished playing a 3 minute blitz game with no bonus time added. My opponent's clock reached 0.00 so i assume i win.The computer does not acknowledge this so i wait, and sure enough his clock now reads 7.5 secs as he makes a move.I move quickly, wait again as his clock hits 0 again, which it does.Still nothing from the computer. He then resigns, with his clock now reading 9.6 secs. What exactly was going on there??

It's not a glitch--it's lag.

Time usually has a beginning, middle, and end.  At a set rate of speed which as we know is still up for discussion, but for the most part, a set rate of speed.

In live chess time has a beginning, middle, back, middle, back, end, back, end, back, and end.  It is pretty easy once you get the hang of it.
