How to play unrated games?

Hello,

I just started playing chess (and on chess.com).

Until yesterday, all my (3days/move) games were unrated, and that was fine with me: being a total beginner, I just want to learn to play as there is no sense to compete against anyone as long as I can barely move the pieces without making a blunder

My last game, yesterday, I noticed my rating was lowered after I resigned. So, I guess I was invited to play a rated game without noticing it. No big deal.

But, now, I can't find how to ask for unrated games (I see where to change the delay between moves, or fixing a time limit). Can someone tell me where is the option?

 You have to be on the live server to find it.   It's easy to find if you know where to look; of course most of this site is like that...LOL.  So, under the Play menu in the top green ribbon bar, just click on Live Chess.  That takes you to the live server and Custom Challenges is the first option right under the big orange Play button.  Have fun!

You don't need to be on the website for either Daily or Live. The main thing you have to be careful of on the website is the Time Control under the New Game dialog is a Daily time control. I don't know why that doesn't default that way when you are on the Daily page (for example, mine is defaulted to a Live control, even on that page): Play > Daily Chess.

Once a Daily time control is selected, the option for Custom Challenge appears and you can choose to make it rated or unrated. If you use the quick options in the main menu, I believe it defaults to the last rating type you chose.

edit: I may have misread a bit; I guess your rated game was Live. For Live, @baddogno is right, you need to go into Live first, don't use the quick buttons. There will be a Custom Challenge there, If you are on a mobile browser, it may load the mobile site and that option will be below the board.

No, you were right as usual Martin.  He was asking about 3day games, but at the time I couldn't figure out how to get the Custom Challenge from Home.   Apparently there are several ways to get to the Custom Challenge.  Thanks.

Hello!! You can play unrated games only with your friends on Chess.com.To play unrated game against a friend follow these steps- While you challenge or send a request to your friend to play a game. You can see "Switch" turn it "ON" to play rated game, you can turn it "Off" if you want to play unrated game. You can play unrated with anyone that is also willing to play unrated. They don't have to be in your friend list. You can also just send out unrated seeks. The latter may take longer to get a match but it will work.
