player just leaves

What do you do when your opponent just leaves, no draw, no resigning, nothing? They leave and their clock keeps ticking away and I'm stuck!

Let them lose on time?

Maybe they're hoping you'll give up, and resign, but don't.

Count your blessings: imagine how much worse it is when a player "eats, shoots and leaves".

Same thing happened today to me. He was losing and kept me on wait for an obvious move. Luckily for me, he came back only after I made comments like "Bad sportsmanship, Dont act like loser, try and fight. One game big deal. etc" Nonetheless i blocked him after that game.

I suggest you play games with short initial time but higher increment like 10|20 5|20 15|10 etc depending on your convenience.

cyrooski

When you say "short initial time but higher increment like 10|20 5|20 15|10"  the first number is total time and the second number is the number of seconds added to your time EACH time you make a move?  Or to get the added time you have to make a move within a certain length of tim?  Cyrus

hsbgowd

For a 5|20 game, 5 minute is the initial time for both players and 20 seconds is bonus time each player gets for every move they make.

Its better than playing a 10|0 game.

EDIT: ya, you get this 20 sec even if you think 2 minutes before making a move.

cyrooski

thanks for the clarification.  But why does giving extra time per move exist in the first place?  why get extra time per move?  I must be missing something..............why not just play alonger game?  how does it motivate anyone?

Also, when a person "disconnects"  where do they go?  What does it mean?  Are they using a computer program to aid them in their moves and need time on another site?

If it's my turn and I need to go to the loo, can I put my game on pause?  I wouldn't think so.

Say it is 1 hour per player game, suppose your opponent makes a losing move after after 10 minutes into the game. He does not disconnect(Disconnecting loses him the game) but keeps browser open and walks away. For you to claim win, you will have to painfully just sit there and wait for his 50 minutes to run out.

On the other hand, if you had played 10|30, you would probably be waiting around 10 min to claim win.

Incremental system was started to be used because top people also kept doing this in real tournaments.

Also, when a person "disconnects"  where do they go?  What does it mean?  Are they using a computer program to aid them in their moves and need time on another site?

- If the player just closes his browser/loses internet connection, "you will see player has disonnected" in the chat box. Because his disconnection is not your problem, he will keep losing time on his clock. If in 2 minutes, he still does not connect back again, you are declared winner as match is abandoned. Don't worry about disconnections. It gives your opponent no advanatage.

No you cant pause live chess games.

You simply dont get this, do you?

Disconnecting and deserting are two different issues.. If your opponent disconnects, they lose within 2 minutes; if opponent walks away from the game while keeping the browser open, you wait for the entire remaining time to claim a win.

I don't care really.

As was mentioned above, I'd add them to the "block" list. I do try to keep my "live chess" to a maximum of 10 minutes just in case this kind of thing happens. I might also add that there may be some honest reasons for such a time lapse (eg, they are at work and need to take a phone call, or someone walked into their office and they need to stop immediately.

What are they doing playing chess on the jop, anyway. Grounds for termination.

Seems like there's a disconnect here allright, but it's regarding your understanding of the original complaint.

A server disconnect or other internet glitch may or may not appear as a disconnect to one or both players.

So it can happen that both sides think the other is not moving and when the game concludes, can't understand how they get a time forfeit "loss" when the other player was the one who quit moving.  You may not have experienced this, but no doubt you've seen numerous threads kvetching about it.

I know staff is working on these concerns but frankly a portion of the disconnects are due to factors totally beyond staff's control. Not everyone understands this fact.

This issue is not happening anymore, they have fixed it. I constantly have internet problems with my ISP and whenever the server goes down, Live chess instantly notifies me of my disconnction from internet. Before the fix, "the opponent's time seemed to just run out and I would lose the game" and then later i realise that my internet was down.

So, I like to play 20 minutes (each) games.  If I reduce it to 10 min. how much time should I give for each move?  what's the average number of moves per game?

If your average game lasts 30 moves, increment time 10 min/30 moves = 20 seconds. so 10|20

There are plenty of ways to kill time on a computer. Maybe try opening up another page and studying openings?!?!
