If your average game lasts 30 moves, increment time 10 min/30 moves = 20 seconds. so 10|20

in the example above you would earn 20 seconds per move and at the end of the game you would have 10 minutes remaining!  That creates no time-pressure.

I'm going to try 10 I 10. At the same time I do not want to wait out someone who abandones a game, I want a slow poke to suffer!!

You got me wrong :(  You get 10 minute initially, but 20 sec thereon for every move you make.

10|10 is equivalent to 30 move 15 minute game. All the best!

You simply dont get this, do you?

Disconnecting and deserting are two different issues.. If your opponent disconnects, they lose within 2 minutes; if opponent walks away from the game while keeping the browser open, you wait for the entire remaining time to claim a win.

this is the internet, you know

anything could have happened when you are playing with a stranger you don't know

maybe the guy had to go to the bathroom or there was any other emergency

i timed out many games because my mom pulled me out of the computer

as you can see, there are many reasons a person can timeout

I realize you get 10 minutes initially but at a 20 second bonus per move one ends up with 10 still left at the end of the game.  I'll try 10 I 10.  thanks for your help.

This is why I don't play a lot of Live chess.

Not an easy situation.  I hope these things are considered when the system starts marking players for timeouts.

Understood.  why not set up 5 I 20 games so whenever you have to leave your partner only has to wait 5 minutes?  Cyrus

Nothing.  You're stuck (still, you're a doctor in Marin...things could be worse). :)

Hey, docs in private practice are suffering these days.  HMOs and PPOs have ruined things.  I do alternative medicine and with all the commercials on TV everyone is doing a mind altering drug of some sort.........

I like the idea of the maximum time per move.  but if you play a 5 I 15 or a

3 I 15 it's about the same thing.

First of all, thanks to the programmers and all the other people working for this site. You are doing a really good job!

Unfortunately, I often faced this problem as well (only tonight three opponents left two moves before checkmate...). How about inventing the following rules:

1. Invent a "Blame" button, where you can rate the behaviour of a certain player (e.g. disconnected shortly before loosing) after the game. It should be easy to verify this information, using a little statistics and chess algorithms.

2. Players who were blamed too often (in comparison to the total number of played games) face restrictions. Perhaps, a user rating could be invented, too. So you would see even before the game starts, how often your opponent tried to sneak out of a lost game.

This should encourage fairplay and prevent cheaters to maintain their fun. How about that?

It's kinda like this except it's a bunch of people in a house living real life. It's some sort of contest and there's lots of fun drama.

It's totes worth it to follow this show srsly.

What do you do when your opponent just leaves, no draw, no resigning, nothing? They leave and their clock keeps ticking away and I'm stuck!

Cyrus

Set your phone timer for one minute before your opponent's time runs out if you have plenty of time left on your own chess clock.
