Trash talkers in live games

So, is it just me or there are way too many trash talkers on this site when you have "chat" option enabled in your game? I'm not talking about friendly banner, but lots of high-school level "you suck as a player, etc" comments right after they win the game. This is one of the many reasons I don't like to have "chat" enabled, but my point is I shouldn't have to disable it either just because we have so many immature players on this site. This is a real problem that needs to be addressed.

I rarely if ever see anyone say anything rude/trash-talky. Maybe the occasional 1800 will tell me a flaw in my opening or critical endgame mistake, but the vast majority of people are simply here to play chess and not talk [deleted by mod (vulgar language)].

Hypothesis: "the lower rated the player, the more likely they are to trash talk."

Thank God someone has raised this issue at last!

I typically play anybody from 800-1400, so I can't speak for 1800+ rated players, but in the group I play there is a LOT of trash talk. Really immature stuff too, like "you are such a d***" or most common "f*** you" when I win a game for example. It happens to me quite a bit. I know there are some immature people on here, but what strikes me is this stuff happens a LOT!  The whold point is, I want to have chat enabled so I can talk to people after the game to tell them 'good job' or listen to their comments, but 9/10 times as soon as the game is over, I get the typical "f*** u" reply to me. It really defeats the point of having "chat" enabled in the first place.

Yalta, I fully agree with crazychessplaya. It gets nasty when you play the sub 1250 lot. That lot also tends to abandon games, leave because they got a phone call or something - in general bottom of the barrel behavior. I try and keep up my rating only so I can avoid that lot.

I reckon one way would be to join groups if you don't really wanna turn off chat. I'm happy with chat off. When I wanna chatter, I come here!

Speak for yourself.

chessbond001

well, here i have played games with about 500 different users . out of these, i have met only 10 users who trash talked after losing the game or tried to abuse me during the game. (i always keep my chat enabled)

i might need to play with a lot of other people to judgewhether there are a lot of immature people here in chess.com Smile

sometimes its the only defence a person has left to talk in such a way it isnt something i condone but we aint all the same i used to always say hi at match start but so many dont reply i just play now mainly if i feel like a chat  use one or more of the groups ive joined but if you ever want a game v  a polite player then feel free to offer me a game (not bullet im too old for that lol)

In my experience, if I beat someone who is several hundreds of ranking points higher than me, it is a blow to their ego, and they will indeed engage in trash talking, as they simply do not handle losing well in this instance.  My favorite specimen is this one "gentleman" who I have been randomly paired up with three times now, resulting in my taking two wins.  He concludes the match with an enraged string of babbling name calling which features his favorite three terms of endearment.  Some variety of "lucky puke", "trash", and "goon".  I kid you not.  I find it hilarious every time he loses it like this, so much so that I started up a screenshot collection of these cherished conversations.  I will enclose two links to separate occasions where I met up with this guy.  In the first, I'm minding my own business, quietly starting to win, and then he begins to berate me. I barbed him back. Apparently, he was particularly mad that I was going to win because he had a perfect record until I came along. Then, because he was flipping out so much, I lost my concentration and made a bad move. However, I decided to cover that up, and made him even angrier by telling him I was giving my pieces away to him, instead. He got so upset by the patronizing, he left the game entirely to play another opponent. Either that, or he was coming to my house. Perhaps I should get the Order Of Protection paperwork ready, just in case.

In this second case, it was a month later, and it was almost a teary eyed reunion when I realized by his signature insults that it was the same guy.

I have learned to laugh over these things.  You have to find the humor in them.

Yeah, it's silly.  Take a look at my wall to see what one lovely player wrote about me after a game :)  I've come to notice that a vast majority of paying members are here to play and rarely (although sometimes) trash talk.  On Yahoo! Chess, if you are a new member, I don't think you're allowed to chat for a certain provisional period.  Perhaps chess.com should consider implimenting it's "One chat message per minute" in the mainhall chatroom for all of the chats.  <-- That rule applies only to 'free' members and would provide the rest of us the opportunity to actually discuss an ongoing game, whether it be our own, or one we're watching.

ColonelKnight

Wait, yahoo has chess?

who cares if a guy trash talks if it really hits you hard then you have insercutiy issues, it should be equivalent to being called a pussy by some drunken hobo who obvious has done nothign with his life: "am i really a pussy? omg i am? this homeless man knows my life so well"
