If 1400-rated player is using a chess engine to cheat, that must be a really weak engine!  Realistically, an engine user should have an inflated rating above 2000.

And the counter-argument that the engine is only used for some of their moves is unprovable.  Even unassisted weak players will often make the same moves that the engine would choose.  During the World Championship match, I sometimes correctly predicted what Carlsen and Anand would play.  So what?  This just shows that some "best moves" are much easier to find than others.

Too many people here are too quick to blame others instead of accepting responsibility for their own lack of progress.

I'm going to make this nice lady a stronger chess player.  She will become better than you are.  :)  Im so serious.  If I don't have the answer to her questions, then I definitely have extremely talent chess friends who will be able to answer the questions for her.

Great to hear you have stronger friends, maybe you should learn from them also?

Hi A_L_I_V_E, that's cool.  I served as a volunteer chess tutor in the past, working with beginners and novices of all ages.  So I encourage your efforts to help others improve at chess.  And if the OP gets stronger and beats me, I will congratulate her.

I never said I was great, but excuse me for not valuing about your opinion on who is great or not, I simply don't think you have the skills to make that judgement correctly.. I play on ICC and Fide Arena primarily, I come here when I'm at work, but in my view it would be more impressive to have a rating of 2000+ if you had only played 300 games in total compared to my ~15000 games over 5 years.

I did not know she had played that many games. Then maybe it's time to choose another hobby if she's still only 1200-1400. Unless she's fine by staying at that level, but seeing her initial post, I highly doubt that.

This game can be difficult for some people, and it's not for everyone.

Some time ago, I've played well a game, but I lost it.

Then I decided to analyze it with strong chess engines.
All moves of the opponent were approved to these chess engines above 3000 rating.

How is that possible?

The moves of the best GMs are not as so accurate as the strongest machines.
But a lot of players here moves exactly as these strong chess engines.

Some players play better than Magnus Carlsen! Congratulations to them!

I played chess online for almost four years now as a free member.. but until this time I cannot make my score into higher than 1400, neither because I am not a good player or maybe its because I was beaten by my opponent who are fond of using a cheating program just to beat me.

Given your low strenght it is very unlikeyl you run into cheaters. How could a cheater have so low rating to end up playing against below 1400 player?

Further proof is that there are abundance of people who have reached better ratings jus by playing. It is not cheaters who stop you from getting a better rating. Just that improving in chess is hard

A lot of players here use some chess assistance during the match. Some use to do the first 10 first moves, others until conquer a victory line and so on.
That's the key point!

Cheaters suck!!!!!!!!!!!

Humans suck!!!!! There is no doubt there are many cheaters. 5-15% is my estimate. They don't cheat every game, or all the time, but cheat they do....

Ziggyblitz

5% of my opponents have been banned for cheating so I'd guess 10% to 15% of my opponents are cheats. At the 1400 level I'd expect even less cheating.

VLaurenT

15% is my estimate. Out of 10M members, that's 1,5M cheaters. A lot.

You can cheat and have your rating at 1400 : just cheat occasionally (1 out of 2 or 3 games for example).

They really do, don't they ? Especially as it's so easy for them to come back right after being banned...

Mark my words.  She is already better than you.

Yes, she might already be better at chess than me.  I never said otherwise.  And I would be happy to accept a challenge from her, you, or anyone else.  What's the big deal?  You sound like you have a chip on your shoulder.

How many members can't play chess at all and want to make it look like they can play ?

formyoffdays

People cheat at all levels on here (both to win and to lose), but you'd be unlucky to run into that many that you couldn't improve your rating.  I have had periods where my rating has dropped like a stone; it's usually because I play badly, though it doesn't always seem like it at the time.  It may be worth looking hard at some of the games where you think someone has cheated to see if you didn't just play some bad moves.  I have even been accused of cheating when an opponent hung his queen.

1,5M ? Tongue Out

Nimzo-Jitsu

Well.. in others webgames the community has a option to send a claim about a player together with a short explanation.
When a player has accumulated many claims, a deep investigation is made based what the is written at the sent claims.

This simple method is very efficient!

I think this is the better way to detect cheaters!

You can't be serious about that number... I usually think you have decent posts, but in this topic we seem to have completely opposite opinions.

I don't blame the women, after all they should stay in the kitchen and feed the children, but you sir, should know better!

Not only is far from all 10 million active players, I doubt more than half that amount has played more than 50 games in average. Also,

Nicely spotted, here, have a cookie Mr. Sherlock!

exiledwanderer

There is definitely cheating on every chess site...

I replay almost all my games with computer analysis and it amazes me what moves a 1400 or even 1800 player hit when the position is highly complex.  I'll be staring at it with no ideas and then they make some tiny positional pawn move that is very very difficult.

I think people cheat on here often...even if its only a couple moves a game when the position gets tough.

denner

That's why I play mostly bullet. Much harder to cheat. Online chess is ripe for cheaters. Who here can say they haven't been tempted to consult a computer especially after a blunder? I have been tempted but I want my rating to reflect what I can do for myself not with assistance because after that it's not your rating anymore. But knowing how people are, I'd wager there 'a quite a bit of it on here.
