Hmm... is N, Awlins near Nu, Orleawns?

There are a lot of chess players in New Orleans.  You can always catch chess hustlers on Canal Street in New Orleans on Friday and Saturday nights. Also if you set up your board in a public area they will come.  People from New Orleans love to relax and take things easy, so you are bound to find others who love to play chess. Being born and raised in New Orleans I noticed that things are a lot different after the storm but the culture of chess in New Orleans is still very strong.  Famous chess players like Paul Morphy came from New Orleans and his gravestone is just outside of the French Quarters in Saint Louis Cemetery.  You can also look up chess tournaments at USCF.com 

So... how different is the city after Katrina?

Its just that after Katrina a lot of people never came back to New Orleans and they kind of taken a lot of the original culture with them.  Our culture became marginalized to make a profit and old time ways became lost.  Frenchmen st for example was before Katrina a place for the locals now its just like Bourbon Street. There are also a lot of small changes that happen.  Like before Katrina Pirate's Ally had a plaque that was on the side of St. Louis Cathedral.  The church always wanted to remove the plaque but because it was a historical monument marking Pirate's Ally they couldn't do any thing about it.  Now after Katrina its removed.  I remember as a boy my Mother taking me to Pirate's Ally to see that plaque and learn our history.  Things are erase and the rich are pushing out the people who brought in the profit to begin with.  The list really goes on and on. I can talk for hours about it. 

NM Jude Acers has been taking on all comers at chess from a gazebo ion Decatur Street, not far from the Cafe du Monde. He's been doing it for around 50 years, barely surviving hurricane Katrina.
