Is it safe to go out to play chess tournaments?

Been playing chess throughout. It is certainly safe to play chess with your fellow man. Despite what our overlords might want us to think.

I still stand by what I said... keep your mask on and wash your hands and you'll be fine. Been playing since may 2021 and I haven't caught the virus yet, so I must be either lucky or doing something right. I like to think it is a bit of both.

On a side note, my ten year old brother did catch the virus a while back, but since I don't interact with people in my family I escaped quarantine unscathed.

How do you know you haven't caught it? I know many people who have had it, and never knew it at the time. When I had it, it was indistinguishable from a regular cold as far as unpleasantness.

I do agree that wearing a mask and good hygiene probably helps, even if very little. When I used to wear one it was always the breathable see through mesh kind that didn't impede airflow. I stopped wearing a mask about two months ago.

We just got back from Texas where very few people wear a mask. Every night we would go to Quarterdeck, the nightclub inside one of the hotels on South Padre Island. Inside there were many dozens of people packed into a small area for hours at a time. For all the days we were there, a grand total of two people wore a mask, and even then it wasn't for the whole time they were there. And I didn't hardly see anyone under 30 years old.

Even in our state, Oregon, many have just given up. Supposedly masks are still required but I never wear one. So it seems now more than ever herd immunity is the way to fight the virus. Build up immunity, move on, and hopefully we can stop ruining the country and society by hiding under a rock.

Maybe a 30 minute time control is reasonable enough for something casual like that

If you are vaccinated and boosted, yes.

I'm vaccinated, and some of my friends aren't. A lot of us got it at the same time, and the symptoms were no more severe for those who weren't vaccinated.

Fears about covid just comes across as very dated now. Seriously would not give covid any mind (so long as you are reasonably healthy), and just get on with your business.

I feel somewhat bad for those who cancelled their winter plans of 2020 whilst politicians were having parties and laughing about it. But that's what anyone gets for buying in to fearmongering and not having their own minds/making their own decisions.

AFROOOOOO
Any news here in Sweden?

Hey everyone, covid is still a serious issue in some places, and the forums isn't the place to be talking about it. Just follow your local health authority guidelines. Covid superthread: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/off-topic/covid-19-discussion?page=171

What happens when your local health authority is dead wrong? As new information comes to light, positions change. It should probably be up to each individual to decide if they want to take the advice of that local health authority, or ignore it.

I certainly would not be giving advice to other people about something that, as you say could be serious in some places, which turns out to be completely wrong.

Isn't covid the exact reason this topic exists? "is it safe to go out to play chess tournaments?"

I don't think the OP was referring to carjackings, slip and fall risks, or heart attacks.

HolographWars

It's really your decision. Just get the facts and decide, the risk is different for everyone.
