Puzzle: Arrange the 8 pieces on the board in a manner that they don't cross each other either horizontally or vertically.
I don't get what you mean by "cross each other". But if you mean "place 8 rooks on the board so they don't attack each other", here's one solution:
If it were the queen, it would cross.
Now try placing them so that they do not cross each other, either vertically or horizontally or even diagonally. None of the pieces should be on the same diagonal.
