anupralhad ,I'm not sure about your solution in #10 - if Black moves 1...Kg4 then how do you mate in 3 moves ?

Three of the posted puzzles are illegal positions. (posts 1, 2, and 15).

Thanks anupralhad, I've never had a puzzle created just for me before     Smile

It's very logical & nicely composed. I solved it without any errors but had to think carefully about it. Always a good idea to have more than one way of checking the Black king on at least one move because it makes people stop & calculate which is the best - the second move gave me the most trouble !

Some people dislike puzzles which involve a queen sacrifice but don't worry about them - it's a clever technique used by many of the greatest G.M.'s. Just look at some of the games of Alekhine for example - he used queen sac.'s with real flair !
Here's an example...

Takes calm nerves to give up your queen like that.

And your point is ?  Correct me if I'm wrong but there's no such thing as a set of rules that governs the composition of a chess puzzle - I've seen puzzles with ten or more queens of the same colour on the board but so what !

A chess puzzle is a process of logical problem-solving & not to be mistaken for a real game, even though some may be derived from actual games.
The only 'rule' that really matters is that it should do what it states in the title !

The puzzle in post #15 seems pretty good to me anupralhad.  Clever use of Zugzwang - It took me a while of staring at it before the solution came to me.

I kept thinking I had to find some way of bringing the white rook (on g1) & queen into play, perhaps advancing the pawn on the h-file.
Nice one !

My point is that it isn't a chess puzzle if the rules of the game are not observed. It's a bizarre variant game masquerading as chess.

As for chess problem conventions, see http://www.saunalahti.fi/~stniekat/pccc/codex.htm#c1

"Article 14 - Legality of Positions

(1) A position is legal if it can be reached by a sequence of moves from the initial array. Otherwise, the position is called illegal.

(2) In studies and problems that apply the FIDE-rules, illegal positions are not acceptable for composition tournaments unless the tournament conditions so stipulate."
