Double Promotion-Solution Puzzle (EDIT: my mistake!) :P

I came across an (AWESOME) puzzle where in a given position you can promote both to a Queen and a Rook and still successfully checkmate.
This was on Tactics Trainer.

I did promote to a Queen because I was suspicious of the 1-and-only right answer, afterwards coming across a member complaint, quoted below:

Actually, in TT, wherever promoting to a rook is as good as promoting to a Queen, you need to promote to a Queen to avoid getting yourself into a frustrating situation (of finding the right solution and losing points).

Over-cleverness isn't rewarded here (where is it?)

And here's the diagram for the aforementioned move, from the FEN of the given position:

Turns out that the Rook promotion is really a hard to resist temptation. I almost did it, but then stopped to ponder a bit and try to guess the matrix.
So maybe this general promote to a Q rule could become common knowledge somewhere on tactics page, or it must be "learned the hard way"? tongue.png
That is, if multiple choices in TT are out of question really. There's also the report problem, but trully, this tactic was a super instructive endgame one, two beautiful ideas together and then the amazing (2 options) mate. I wouldn't want to see it go away just because of this particular fact, rather I wanted to bring it to the table. There might not be too much multi solution puzzles out there, but it's something worthy of ideas and discussion. happy.png

run the analysis board, rook promotion gives way to a 21 move mate while queen promotion gives way to a 6 move mate

That’s not the point. Imagine another black pawn on g3 - then both promotions would be equally precise.

A well-designed tactics trainer acknowledges any solution which yields a decisive advantage. For example, the tactics trainer on chesstempo.com implements this well. If you find an altarnate solution, it tells you “that’s a good move but not the computer’s first choice, keep looking”. You can even set there in the settings if you want puzzles with alternative moves or not.

cool

In fact! I was wrong, and so the member!
Turns out if Black does g3 instead of c1=Q the mate with the Queen is way faster. lol

Makes sense.
