Its true its no longer mate in 4, because your version is mate in 3.

I saw the following and the king moves were all forced.

1.g8=Q+ forced Kd7 .2Qe6+ forced Kd8 3.Qe7+ forced Kc8 4.Qc8# ( note the typo 4. should read Qc7#)

The image was so large and while scrolling and writing the moves I did not see the whole board and missed that the pawn on d5 was protected by the light square bishop, thus after Kxd6 , Qe7+ I thought Kxd5, so you are correct Qe7 is mate in three, This is of course wrong because it is not best play by black. Therefore your sequence of moves mating in four is correct. My apologies.

Having said all of that, there is a faster mate available, which black can do nothing about. See if you can figure it out.

@mai Apparently white wins. Solve how it is done with best play using your head not an engine.

This is an old mate-in-2 puzzle that can't be solved because we have incomplete information. Stockfish especially can't solve it properly.

If black can't castle, the solution is 1. Ke6. No matter what black plays, the g7 pawn promotes to a queen for mate.

If black can castle, Ke6 doesn't work because black castles. But in this case we know the last black move was not with the king or rook, because then castling would be illegal. So the last black move was e7-e5. The solution is dxe6 en passant, again threatening g8Q mate. Black' only defence is to castle, then 2. b7 is mate.

Ke6 Black any move then either g8=Q# or g8=R#

We had to find out what color was on the move, if black had castled or not, and in the end if the pawn could be taken en passant.

I fail to see where the "advanced concept" in all of that was.

It's more of a chess joke or a logic puzzle rather than a proper chess puzzle. I have seen it a long time ago in a book by the great mathematician Raymond Smullyan (The Chess Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes).
