John Nunn's 50 favourite puzzles

Hello everyone. I have found this series of puzzles in my chess software. I think they are quite interesting. They increase in difficulty every time. I'm going to post a new one avery 2 or 3 days to see how good you are. NOTE: these are all the 50 favourite puzzles of a GM, so they are very difficult, altough the first few ones are simple.

The one above is the first in the list. White to move, mate in 2. Good luck.

    Great puzzle, keep 'em coming.

rooperi

Not too hard, keep 'em coming. I collect puzzles, if you could add the name of the composer?

rooperi

Ah, found that one. Max Euwe, 1927

Kernicterus

that's nice.  I couldn't see it.

cordoba5

that was a simple one. muy facil

bigfish

nice and simple

It's great to see that you enjoy my puzzles. OK here's the next one, and for Rooperi, this time I tell you the composer too.

White to play and mate in 2. This one is a bit tough because black has a discovered check with his king. You must figure out 5 different mates. In the solution you'll find the toughest black answer. Good luck. The composer is Feast-1897.

oinquarki

I like the second one more, even though they were both really good. I've never seen a puzzle where you counter a discovery with a discovery.

rooperi

I'm not gonna lie, couldn't do that one. Excellent. And thanks for the names.

No, Rf3#

The point here is to set up a mating net by answering black's discovered check with a discovered mate! Quite interesting, altough it was only the second of the 50 ;)

bigfish

nice

The third puzzle composed by Taverner-1889

At the moment all White's mating threats are covered by the four black pieces on the back rank, so how can White break the deadlock? White to play and mate in two.

If these are 3 of the "easy" ones, then I'm dreading to see #50.  I find the fact that the first move is NOT a check or a forcing move makes these especially difficult, though admittedly very enjoyable.   Keep 'em comin.....

rooperi

I had to peek again. Very tough.

Keldorn

The first move is indeed a quiet move. I'll wait one more day until I reveal the solution's explanation text.

mattattack99

I have those exact same puzzles on the software chesmaster 10th edition.

texaspete

Clever composition - the rook needs to move and can only go to h1 because a Qh2# is required in 1 line

Can't see that happening in a game though - every move black can make sets up one of 12 different mate threats for white
