What if black doesn't take the rook sacrifice on the first move and instead focuses on preventing back rank mate? It looks like black could make the game longer.

What if Black plays 1...Bxd2+ or 1...Kc8 ?

good , easy though

most immediate continuation for black that comes to mind is Bishop takes pawn check. King to f1.  Then maybe rook d1 check queen takes rook. queen takes rook on h1. I like black.

Dam I always look at stuff too fast. The bishop would be blocking the rook from checking. so maybe first bishop takes pawn check. King moves to  prevent back rate mate with something like d6 and then continue the attack or just play d6 first and then attack    but black does have a nice attack  I would say a winning position. white  got lucky here imo.

black is winning in this position

colle-pirc
and rook takes pawn is losing!  another 4 points (black is already ahead by 3)

onehandgann

yes shows the importance of never assuming your opponent will do what you want/expect him or her do. In no way was black forced to take the rook.

White's best move (objectively) from the starting position is clearly Rxb4.

After Rxg5, with correct play black should clearly win. For example:

  1. Rxg5           Bxd2+
  2. Kf1            Bc3
  3. Qc1            Rd1+
  4. Qxd1           Qxh1+
  5. Rg1            b4+
  6. Qd3            Bxd3+
  7. cxd3           Qh3+
  8. Ke2            Qh5+
  9. f3             Qh2+
 10. Kf1            Nh4
 11. d4             Qd2
 12. Rg8+           Kf7
 13. Rg7+           Kxg7
 14. Kg1            Qg2#

2.   Bc3    What about the knight on e2? seems like white can just take the bishop if played like that. so not queen c1 but queen takes bishop or knight takes bishop and white is ok. Or am I missing something? I cannot think 15 moves ahead but just preventing the backrate mate leaves white with a nice attack(For prevention I like d6). Rook on h1 is juicy for example. If that rook is moved then  black can instead penetrate the position with the queen etc  maybe queen takes c2 and then push the b pawn to  bring the bishop into the  attack. Would be fun to play blacks position.

Knight takes bishop is impossible because black has the only knight and all the bishops.

Queen takes bishop is punished with Queen takes Queen (or possibly Rd1+) and could continue:

3...Qxc3
4.Rxg6 Rd1+
5.Kg2 Bb7+
6.f3 Qxc2+
7.Kg3 f4+
8.Kxf4 Qxg6
9.Rh5 Qf6+
10.Kg3 Qxf3+
11.Kh2 Qg2#

I'm sorry I forgot to include the knight on e2. You are right.
onehandgann
How does black have the only knights. I see a white knight on e2.
peterkirby
With the knight there (correctly), it's still black's advantage but not a quick forced mate.
onehandgann
sorry wrote too fast. saw your second reply afterwards.
