Dear Chess Mennesker

Some geek information if you are wondering about your percentile ranking based on your tactics rating; The right column in the table below gives the rating range where at some point, the percentile exceeds the figure on the left column.

Percentile     Rating

>80%              1350-1450

>90%              1550-1650

>95%               1650-1750

>98%               1950-2050

>99%               2050-2150

>99.5%            2250-2350

>99.9%            2650-2750

>99.95%          2750-2850

>99.99%         3050-3150

Have fun!Laughing

Seriously? 80% around 1400? I kinda doubt this. My guess is that many people just play 1 puzzle, succeed it then stay around 1200.

chess_times_420

I doubt it. Avg rating is 1050 and maximum number of people are in this range. Thought tactics training starts at 1200 initially for a newbie... based on my experience i think this is true. i am between 1650-1750 i.e 93-96% range which sounds about right to me........

Where did you get these though? Your own research?

Where is 2350-2650?

Don't really know what to do with this information. Interesting, I guess.

chess_times_420

Wow!, this one is very interesting.
By the way, how did you find this information?

I already  tried to find it but it is nowhere to be found.

I don't believe this, unless only lower level players solve puzzles. I am an average blitz and bullet player, around p80 in those (I know that is not the average strictly speaking, but in club chess I would be a weak player). Yet at 2000 I should be p95 in puzzles. It would be great if that were true but it's not probable. Chess.com should report the percentiles just like with the other stats.

larrybros

My feeling is that puzzle rating is largely a function of the amount of time spent on them. Taking more time is important as mistakes hurt 3x more than solving help.  While I'm sure a gifted player can reach 3000 faster than an average player, both i am certain can reach it and perhaps much higher. It's mainly a matter of putting in the time and being disciplined as opposed to impulsive in my opinion.

For those wondering how he came up with the percentiles above they seem to have come from this page https://www.chess.com/leaderboard/tactics

ZackTheGuy

A few days ago GM Lenderman said in a lecture that a good player should be content with 3000 in puzzles on chess.com. Kinda nutty, but I suppose he's not one to dismiss!

magipi

Supposedly there are tons and tons and tons of accounts who only solved a small handful of puzzles and then stopped. So they have a low rating but not because they can't get higher but because they won't. This biases the results to such a great extent that the above list is complete nonsense.

That-User-Name-Is-Taken

It might also be interesting to know the difference between the average and the mean.

gottzmann

It would be good to get the players that have been playing for longer than a specific set of time, and are still relevant. Like last played within one week’s time. Or does the latter part of that algorithm not even matter? In any case, the higher part of this absolutely matters. People that got discouraged and quit at 1200 rated puzzles are not 1800+ that’s for certain.

I think you mean the median and the mean. Average and mean are the same thing. tongue.png

Number of players is more important. Being top 5000 on chess.com in puzzles sounds good to me.
