Hey everyone, I have a new puzzle for all of you that is from a VERY impossible position

it was made by the one, the only, Ottó Bláthy

All I will say is don't attempt to solve this puzzle for your own sanity, plus it'll only waste your time to attempt to solve it. If that doesn't deter you, all I have to say is... GOOD. LUCK.

White to move and Win.

Hint: CHECKMATE IN 290!!!

I played it to the end and solved it

It is technically impossible, ur right

mantine73

3 bishops means that one was a pawn

mantine73

The only black piece gone, therefore is the queen

mantine73

And there are tripled pawns which would require 3 captures while only one has been made

I used hints once I played about 20 moves because I just wanted to see how the rest played out.

A while ago I tried to understand why Blathy used such a ridiculous position and why not a more ridiculous one. For instance, adding another black pawn on the h-file would have made the solution even longer!

I concluded that The author had a very private notion of legality which I named in the box legality. It consists of these elements:

  • You can place all 32 units in a standard chess box anywhere on the board ....
  • ... except pawns on the 1st and 8th rank
  • You can replace any pawn with a piece indicating it was promoted. There are no restrictions in placing those pieces
  • Note that bishops have no square color in the box so they can be placed anywhere
  • Obviously the kings cannot be in illegal checks

Let me know if you can find any of Blathy's compositions not satisfying these requirements!
