Hi there. Actually thats not quite true... I would put it this way. A decoy is when you want a piece to go to a specific square so you can do something like another tactic. Where as you also get a deflection where you want the piece to just go away from a specific square. Might be a bit easier to explain on a board.

A decoy tactic is forcing an enemy piece to move to a square that prevents it from guarding an original square.
For example, if the black queen is at c7 and the f7 square is being attacked, getting the queen to move to c6 would be a successful decoy tactic.
