@RPaulB, no problem. :)

As I said the board is fine.   Here is how to play 2D chess on that 4D board.  Place the back pieces on a middle row and the pawns on the second board on the same row.   One may not move up or down or forward or back, only to the next board on the same row.  One may only move from board to board as one moves forward or back now.  That's EXACTLY the same game you are playing now.   So have fun.  Only you are playing on a 4D board.   With a liitle luck some one will start 3D and then 4D.   But you may have the only 4D board on earth.

I like to play 3-D tick-tack-toe in a pub projected down to 2-D with 3 boards. 4-D tick-tack-toe might be fun too.

As for 3-D and 4-D chess, I have trouble enough mastering 2-D. Wink

After10 months an answer is great.  I was beginining to "Think" , people do not think. Thank you for the comment.  I bet it feels good to do a little extra thinking.  On the side alittle , did you know there can be 5 DIfferent ways a pawn can mover in a 4D game and still generally follow the rules for chess.

VirtualKnightJoakim

In starting position, can the pawn move 2 squares in any direction? I guess en passant would only be possible in the direction of the enemy advancing pawn.

RPaulB

Sorry,  did not see your comment earlier.  In 2D chess, the pawn can only move in one other direction;  so in 3D you can keep that rule , but it is hard to fine THE direction it can move in,  Better is in two direction, but not both,  Allowing both addes still another 4 pawn squares to go to.  So there are 3 ways to play it.  In 4D  things are even harder,.  Hope that helps.

 Hi. A long time ago I designed a 4D chess variant, so every once in a while, I look around to see what new has turned up in 4D chess. If you are interested, let me recommend the chessvariants.org website. It's been around for a couple decades, and has literally thousands of variants of chess, plus a few other games which are chess related. It has about 20 4D variants, some of which you can play online against another opponent.

The site is not terribly user-friendly, but when you go to the site, you'll see a menu bar at the top with the choices PLAY, GAMES, MORE, SEARCH... Hover over Games, slide down to Different Boards, then right and down to Three dimensional and click on that. It will list all the 3D games in the database, and below the listing (and a warning that you need to narrow the search because there are too many items to display) you will get a form with all sorts of choices. The 3rd choice is Category. Change it from 3D to 4D & higher, and submit. That will bring you to the 4D list.

Fwiw, here's an image of my design: https://boardgamegeek.com/image/1763432/hyperchess4?size=original

Gee ;  I would be interested,  BUT I can not get in your site.

Which site are you having trouble with, chessvariants.org or boardgamegeek.com? I just got into both sites, no trouble.
