I don't like cricket... I love it :)

Lots of news coming up when the ashes start. Plus big bash plus other series happening.

England have decided to rest senior pacer James Anderson for the first Ashes Test beginning here on Wednesday as part of their workload management.

By not playing the series opener, the team management feels Anderson can be better prepared for the subsequent pink-ball Test in Adelaide.

I just read that... Time will tell if it is a good idea

Latest news :  England have yet to decide whether they will replace Anderson with Ian Botham 66, in Australia, as a commentator. They tell me Beefy wants to play, but one over spells could be a challenge, Although they have decided where they'll hide him in the field - behind a tree.

Rorsaaaaa

I love cricket

Ah Botham. Summer of 81 will never be forgotten

Not watching until they stop "taking the knee".

AussieMatey

Starting in the 2nd Test, they've increased the lunch break to 2 hours, so that the two elderly gentlemen, Chris Broad 35 and Anderson 39, when he comes back, will just be able to make it off the ground, have lunch, and return just in time for the resumption. happy.png

I am sure they'll miss you more than their ethics

Isn't refusing to accept people taking the knee just as bad as forcing people to take the knee. You are removing free choice either way

England captain Joe Root on Friday led a scintillating fightback alongside Dawid Malan to revive England from 61 for 2 chasing a first-innings deficit of 278 runs to reducing it to just 58 with his 51st half-century in the format in day 3 of the Gabba opener of Ashes 2020/21. And when Root takes the field in Saturday, he will be on the verge of breaking a massive Sachin Tendulkar record in Test cricket.

Root, en route to his 158-ball 86, surpassed former England captain Michael Vaughan to become the leading run-getter from England in a single calendar year in Test cricket. Root now has a tally of 1541 runs in 25 innings this year at an average of 67 with six centuries and two fifties. Root is still unbeaten on his score of 86.

He now needs 22 runs more to surpass former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar's record of 1562 runs, which he piled in the year 2010, to become the fifth-highest run-getter in a single calendar year in Test cricket, having also surpassed former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting, who had scored 1544 runs in 2005.

I am gutted.... Not sure why I expected anything more but still gutted

The elusive list is led by Pakistan's Mohammad Yousuf (1788 runs in 2006), followed Viv Richards (1710 runs in 1976), Graeme Smith (1656 runs in 2008) and Michael Clarke (1595 runs in 2012).

Root also stands 115-runs short of surpassing Smith's aforementioned tally to become the skipper with the most runs in a single calendar year.

If not at the Gabba, Root will have the opportunity to chase the two records in the remaining two Ashes Tests which will played in 2021 as part of the 2020/21 series.

Australia wins the 1st Test by 9 wickets, but England look like too good a team not to fight back.

We need someone else to stand up besides Root. There are some quality players there who need to take this chance. It's depressing how poor we are in Australia

England have been docked five World Test Championship points after their loss to Australia for maintaining a slow overrate in Brisbane. Joe Root's men were also fined 100 per cent of their match fees after they went down by nine wickets inside four days.

England are now sixth on the points table with nine points, one win and three losses with their percentage points sinking to 15. Sri Lanka are at the top with two wins while Australia started their campaign with a win and take the second spot. Pakistan, India and West Indies follow, rounding up the top five for now.

"As per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a team is docked one point for each over short," the ICC release read. "Match referee David Boon has also penalized England 100% of their match fee for falling five overs short of the targets after adjusting for time allowances. Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel charges players 20% of their match fee for every over the team falls short on."

There was a fine for Travis Head too as the Australia batter lost 15 per cent of his match fees after using "inappropriate language" against Ben Stokes in the 77th over. Head scored a century to carry Australia to 425 and help the side pick up a 278-run first-innings lead.
