Doxing, or doxxing (from "dox", abbreviation of documents), is the Internet-based practice of researching and publicly broadcasting private or identifying information (especially personally identifying information) about an individual or organization.[The methods employed to acquire this information include searching publicly available databases and social media websites (like Facebook), hacking, and social engineering. It is closely related to Internet vigilantism and hacktivism.

Doxing may be carried out for various reasons, including inflicting harm, harassment, online shaming, extortion, coercion, business analysis, risk analytics, aiding law enforcement or vigilanteversions of justice.

Doxxing is totally unethical and illegal under state criminal laws. It's a crime and can lead to serious legal consequences like imprisonment, if you get caught harassing others and sharing their private information.

It appears Chess.Com is being pro-active in ending the practice displayed by a few members.

What some fail to understand- doxxing at the minimum violates ToS, regardless of who the target is.
It is against the law even when it’s purpose is to assist law enforcement in catching the bad guys. There is no justification for the practice outside existing legal statutes.
