Firefox extensions

I've been a Firefox user for a long time (since version 0.9) and enjoy tweaking it with extensions (in a non-techie sort of way).  A while back I decided to cut down on the number of extensions I had because it was getting out of hand!  I had well over 30 which seemed like quite a lot to me, and I wasn't really using some of them.

As a result, I managed to reduce the number of extensions I use to 16.  Four of these I regard as absolutely essential.  Others are just useful.  They are:

Essential

  • Tab Mix Plus - The best extension ever.  It allows you to tweak practically everything about how the tabs work.  If I didn't have it installed, it would be like chopping my right arm off.
  • All-in-One Sidebar - Another essential.  Opens your history, bookmarks, downloads and extensions in a neat sidebar instead of an ugly pop-up box.  Also allows you to have a sidebar toolbar.
  • Customize Google - If you use Google as your main search engine, then this extension is fantastic.  You'll wonder how you ever surfed without it!  It allows you to tweak Google's search results in so many ways - hiding adverts is a popular feature!
  • Menu Editor - Cluttered menus?  Fed up of extensions installing options all over the place in your browser?  Take back control with Menu Editor, which allows you to re-order or hide all options on menus, including the context menu.

Useful

Do you have your own favourite extensions that you can't do without?

My favorite Firefox extension (and currently the only one I'm using) is NoScript. This is worth its weight in gold, if only for security reasons, since it blocks all sorts of malicious scripts on untrusted web sites.  Not to mention getting rid of lots of spam popups and such.

Bravo!  Was it called Firebird when you started using it?

Firefox is completely free.  It is MUCH better then IE6 and many people prefer it to IE7.  The only reason IE7 has more market share is that it comes pre-installed on practically every PC.  Firefox has less trouble with security flaws, which is a big plus.  Why not try Firefox and see if you like it.  You could use both for a while and see what you think!

Don't try Firefox!! Because you'll like it so much that you'll feel tempted to try thunderbird.. and then you'll become open source addict!!.. and after an year using firefox you'll end up running linux Ubuntu with Firefox and all that free software out there.

Ooops .. I already got into this trap ;-)

lol!  I've also tried Thunderbird (that's an email program, for anyone who doesn't know), but I don't think I'll be moving to Linux anytime soon!
