I am not Muslim, but I know some Islamic teachings.
Playing chess is like playing other board games or other video games.
As a hobby, moderation is the key. However, if chess is your profession (you make a living, winning tournaments and/or teaching), then chess is a profession that requires perfection from you, you need to dedicate more hours to it, but moderation is always the key.
As you know, gambling is haram (prohibited), but chess is not gambling.

I have seen some very attractive, if hard to identify, Islamic chess sets. Take this one on ebay for example.   MUSLIM (ISLAMIC) CHESS SET

Well, I have seen different sets. The cross on the King piece is not the only symbol. I have seen Incas vs Spanish, very good.
