The Bonin (aka Ogasawara) Islands are a chain of small islands south of Japan and somewhat east of Iwo Jima. The area is volcanically and seismically active.
A new volcanic island has lifted up from the ocean floor this week, and joined the island chain. That, in itself, isn't all that unusual.
What is unusual is that the newly uplifted island has carried up with it several wrecks dating back to the battles fought in this area during the closing days of World War Two.
