I'm going to have to go with pirates. Pirates are still around today taking over cargo ships for ransom money. They clearly have the adaptability and awesomeness to survive the test of time!
PIRATES VS NINJAS

Ok, well I don't think that peope are thinking of ninjas like Naruto. Bit honestly, I say ninjas. I agree that it depends on the terrain, so let's say it's on aa deserted isalnd. Or, a pirate ship. Deserted island would be ninjas of course. They can last longer without food. Pirate ship, it depends on the ratio of pirates and ninjas. I say at least 5 pirates for every ninja.

Pirates are most at home on a deserted island, and what's more, it's where their treasure's been buried. They're travelling merchants and know what they need, they don't live at sea but use it to commute.
They have guns and work as a team, unlike the cat-like mentality of the lone ninja who needs to get in very close for his weapons to be effective enough to take down the pirates.
I think, without a weapon and on open ground and even no's: Pirates.

Pirates, mainly because I hate it when people think ninjas are soooo cool because of naruto.
naruto is so retarded.... but id still say ninjas

Yes, but so are ninjas- there was a ninja burglar in NY city last year. So they've both found ways to keep up with the times.

I have to disagree with you there Enpassent, Ninjas would win without weapons and on open ground. For one thing, ninjas are trained in many different forms of martial arts not just weaponry. Pirates' main weapon, on the other hand, (disregarding the cannon) are their firearms and swords and probably have very little training in a straight out melee fight. Open terrain would also favor ninjas because they not only live on land but most of their fighting also takes place on solid ground, whereas a pirate's main battlefield is on board a ship, where they are not only hindered by space but also the other people around, not to mention the movement of the sea.
Granted, pirates are probably physically stronger than ninjas because of the manual labor done on board a ship. Ninjas, however, are probably more agile and have a more strategic mind than pirates, at least in a person to person fight, since most ninjas tend to work alone or in very small groups relative to pirates. Pirates, on the other hand, could have a more strategic mind towards large scale battles between ships and battalions of men.
As an aside, although I did enjoy naruto as a show to a certain point, they are not the ninjas I envision when someone mentions a ninja.

Everyone has a better understanding of ninja (due to commercialism), but realise little about the pirate. Pirates, unlike the depiction in the 'Pirates of the Carribeean' film series, are agile and constantly engage in brawls at sea and on land. The term 'shown the ropes' comes from on-board a ship where one of the first roles of a seaman is to sit in the basket on the top of the mast throughout the night in freezing cold temperatures.
During sail the men are up and down the ropes all day for lots of reasons. There are trials at sea involving physical tests and fights on board with no referee or disipline that the ninja practice.
In that lies the pirates strength over the ninja, I believe.

Thank you for looking at this logically!

If these Pirates are like the ones from the Pirates of panzance and the Ninjas are like those of a classic Shaw Brothers flick, then without a doubt the Ninjas are gonna win!
Who would win? I know my answer and have many reasons to defend it. What's yours??
