Stalkers and general creeps

For the life of me, I do not understand why it is SO bleeping difficult for men to understand or accept that when a homosexual girl joins a site that is supposed to be about chess, she does not expect or appreciate signing in and constantly seeing flirtation messages from horny zippers. I am getting SO tired of it!!! Can I be any more plain in my profile that I am a lesbian? Some of the commentary I get from men about whatever I look like is not considered a compliment, it starting to feel more like harassment.

bishops-dottir

i VERY understand.  there is a team that is to help girl and to find opponent who are trust...

MortalWombat

If someone is making unwanted advances on you in a thread or on your page where anyone can see it then just contact a mod.  If you're being harassed in a message then contact support.

RyanHeitsgebot

It's not just girls Kelsey. As soon as people realize I'm gay the anger and hate just pours out of people. Just try to remember, that for every bigot, for every perv, for every republican, there's someone else who's on your side.

The tide is turning, and the age of freedom may actually be upon us!

If it's such a problem (which it shouldn't be in the first place, but welcome to the internet) why not change your profile photo to something that doesn't make you stand out to every pathetically despererate person on here (or any other large public forum)? Say, a funny drawing on a rock, or a photo of a Three Toed Sloth? A picture of yourself only draws the attention of the keyboard casanova. Apparently you can even use photos of models or actresses and claim them as your own, and there are people so gullible and desperate as to believe it... go figure! So take a look at the majestic and slow Sloth... That cheeky bugger takes a week to fully digest a meal, did you know that? Digital camouflage, that's what you need if harassment is such a problem. Who's gonna hit on someone with the profile avatar of a creature that takes 7 days to poop out some leaves?

MortalWombat

But why a sloth when you could have a picture of a wombat?  I mean, just look at this little guy!

Two things.
1. Most people genuinely don't listen;
2. Chess.com isn't a dating site.

If you truly only care about the chess part of this site, then you do not need to hint people that you are a girl.

Remove your profile picture. Also remove the part that you say you are a girl in "About me".

I never get any message / game / friend request because nothing about me even remotely hints that I am a girl.

Uh oh, you just revealed yourself. I bet you get several friend requests today lol

Pulpofeira

I'm not the She-Hulk, btw. I'd probably start stalking her if she happens to join the site.

I rest my case.

I was just complaining about how often it is necessary, but my latest 2 offenders from yesterday were easily fixed simply by the block feature.

Block works. I don't get the other posters above essentially saying, "You're being harassed, why don't you do something!" It's victim blaming, victim shaming and that's just as ugly as the troll-like comments you get, if not uglier.

I want a wombat...who can resist such a wonderful creature.Aren't they from Australopithecus?I thought everything from that continent/nation was lethal to humans?

MortalWombat

Lol, they're from Australia.  They are super cute minus their rat-like incisors, so basically as long as they keep their mouth shut lol.  It's kind of funny though--they're considered pests in Austalia since they burrow (so essentially they're Australia's gophers).  Can you imagine that? Dog-sized gophers? I'm sure they do a bit more than cause your porch to sink a bit!

badger_song

Sorry, was distracted from the OP by Mortal's pic. As to the OP, evidently there are many members of gamergate on this site. Being a malevolent jerk and playing chess are not mutually exclusive. Kelsey and Ryan, keep your profile exactly as is...

Lord Byron said it best...

Those who will not reason are bigots...

Those who cannot are fools.

I'm going to Australopithecus to get a wombat.

Frankly, sexual harrassment is a serious offence, both offline and online. It's difficult to deal with, and not everyone can.
Tuning in with the wants and needs and such of others is a difficult skill; yes I know. It'd be nice if people would take care of that stuff.

"Just block" isn't the answer, and I hardly ever do so. But it is our daily reality: we have to filter out a whole lot of guys with insincere intentions.

If we managed to understand eachother better, things would be so much easier for all of us.

RonaldJosephCote

WAKE UP PEOPLEYell  The OP has a point. Sexual assault and harrassment is skyrocketing on campuses, the internet, and in the military. Yesterday's Supreme Court desicion didn't help anybody on social media. And Ireland's decision this week about gay rights got the world's attention.

sleepingbeauty

But the truth is that nomadicknight in post #8 is right. When one has a benign avatar that is not flashy it eliminates this problem all together. I know that with certainty.  Show a little cleavage and they swarm its just fact in here, not a matter of right or wrong. If you want privacy but up a generic photo. problem solved.
