The State of the Forums or Down the Rabbit Hole

It may just be me or it may be global warming or some devious Socialist plot, but something seems out of kilter with the forums.

I noticed this innocuous thread that offended no one and neither broke any posting rule nor even pushed the envelope was summarily locked (without explanation):
https://www.chess.com/forum/view/community/theharbingerofdoom-have-you-heard-of-him

I thought perhaps there was a major crackdown on some unspecified genre of topics, but couldn't find any others.  However I was able to find group of threads at the same time that apparently are deemed suitable despite the fact they 1) have no business in the main forums as they are off-topic or 2) have no business anywhere because they're pointless.
They include but are not limited to:

“But I don’t want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad."
"How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.”

“Curiouser and curiouser!” cried Alice (she was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English).

Humpty Dumpty tells Alice: “When I use a word [make a rule], it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.”

Enough of this jabberwocky.

The forums have for years been the weak link to this site.

I disagree.  While they had been declining, mostly due to the influx of juveniles, they were still viable as long as a certain standards continued being exerted.  The difference now is that there is no standard other than the religious and narrow adherence to the "no cheating discussion" rule with the mindless, non-discriminatory auto-mods handling the rest.

Yeah that thread got closed I think because whoever started it is trying to antagonise the people they have blocked. They did the same with one about woolly socks.

You know what they say, a leopard can’t change it’s spots. And some users just can’t help trying to stir the pot no matter which account they are currently using.

Just kids being kids I guess

By the way, it made me laugh when I saw it. Was already locked. Over 50 indeed😂

Part of the problem is that no one really knows what the "standards" are.  Yes we all know their are site rules, and a TOS.  The problem is that they are not equally enforced.  One person breaks the rules in some way, and its gets the "look the other way" treatment, while others are BAM locked.  But yes, the juvenile problem is here outta control.  The forums are like a giant kindergarten sandbox.

I’ve learned just to stick to the openings section, game showcase, and chess.com community sections, and if I’m feeling really good about myself I may dare venture into the jungles of general chess discussion.

I don't know the purpose behind that thread so I tend to go by what it said and what it said was, as I wrote, innocuous.   One can't (shouldn't) lock a thread by supposition.  Any devious purpose would reveal itself soon enough at which time it would be locked.

I'm not 50 either.... I just feel like it sometimes.

I agree that communication and lack of clarity has always been an issue here.  Lack of specificity leads to more interpretation -- by members and by moderators.  However clear-cut situations have always been clear-cut... but that seems a thing of the past.

In his previous account, he did the same thing. Remember "The Forum Elite"?

batgirl

I don't his previous account but that thread is still open, making closing this one even odder.

Weren't you a mod at one point, Batgirl?

For 12 years, yes.

I think the mods are auto-bots.

(I'm proudly over 50, 60, soon to be over 70.)

yeah share some of the wisdom you gain! I'm nowhere near that mark... or 50... yet.

Sometimes the way things are done around here reminds me of movies made back in the silent film era ( ie: The Keystone Cops  lol ).

Yes and no. One could argue that the myriad of forums is a strength! Lots of nonsense in them though...but I don't see all these forums elsewhere!

To me the 'weakness' is the...emphasis of fluff by the powers that be (ahem...POG, etc) that to me is the weaknesses compared to Chess.com's arch enemy Chess.24 which caters to high level competition and videos.  I prefer to play here though.

As always, to each his own.

See children...that is how you have a proper discussion.
