I’ll do a top 5 professional yo-yos later. 5. Yotricks sage (new edition) The new edition of the sage is still one of the best performing yo-yos for its price of $12.99 USD. It wouldn’t be my first pick for a beginner, but it is an excellent yo-yo for beginners who are interested in learning certain tricks. It has a dimple for finger spins, allowing you to learn the DNA, and it also can be bought with an unresponsive bearing, allowing you to switch it into the more advanced style of play, as long as you change the response pads as well to slimmer ones. 4. Yoyofactory replay pro The replay pro has 2 things going for it: an extremely inexpensive price for an unresponsive yo-yo at just $15.99, and used by gentry stein to win the us national championship in 2016. There’s not much to talk about really, it’s just a really nice, fast playing yo-yo that can take you pretty much anywhere that you don’t absolutely need metal for. 3. Yoyofactory Wedge (or 1up if you can’t find an original wedge, they’re the same yo-yo but the wedge has more history and has a nicer engraving in my opinion.) The wedge is essentially the opposite counterpart to the replay pro, replacing the replays speed with an amazingly powerful spin. This suits Evan Nagaos more extreme, dense and sophisticated tricks where you just need a yo-y that keeps spinning. It too is unresponsive and mostly plastic, except for a metal dimple in the center of the cup, making this yo-yo ideal for learning finger spins and DNAs. All for a very reasonable price of $19.99. 2. Yotricks fizz The fizz is not for people who want the best starter yo-yo (see #4-3 above for that.) It's more for people who aren't sure they want to go very far in yoyoing yet and want something that will put as minimal strain on their wallet as possible while still being usable for all the beginner tricks. Its more narrow shape lends itself more to more traditional style tricks, and allows the yoyo to be not half bad for looping style tricks. However, for $1 more than it is the best overall starter yoyo in my opinion:
The original sage (which thankfully is still available) is such a simple concept that it appears a joke. Essentially, they took a competition-winning design and then converted it into a more beginner-friendly shape with minor changes to the mold of the original, now discontinued design. The original sage uses a classic star shape, which allows you to push it much farther than many other starter yoyos while remaining at a mere $12.99 price point. I learned at least 70% of what I know how to do on this yoyo, and it still is a fun yoyo to this day. The response pads were much better thought out on this yoyo as well, as, unlike the new sage, you can simply swap the bearing without changing anything else and instantly be in unresponsive play. A highly reccomended start to anyones yoyo journey.
