I found an alternative solution to the daily puzzle of 03-06-21;  does this happen frequently?

if you found an alternative solution, it could be 2 things

1. It's not an alternative solution, it's wrong. These officially posted puzzles are really accurate, and don't have other solutions. 

2. You might have found a way to continue the position, but it might not be the best way to do it. In other words, there is a better way to solve it and improve your position more.

In the official solution, first sacrifice rook and then checkmate with the Queen.  In my solution, checkmate directly with the Queen.  Why is that wrong?

OK, not a direct mate, but mate in 2: Q to h4, then Q to h7= mate in 2.  Official solution is mate in 3.

Black could play Rfc8

And then you have nothing

You could try following with 

Qh7+ Kf8
Nxf7 Be6

But you're left with nothing, and black has gained the upper hand

when both sides are attacking, don't make moves that lose the initiative, such as Qh4
