Why are chickens considered dumb?

They can't do calculus...

But not calculus...

I have 4 chickens, and they are smart and dumb. They aren't as dumb as people think they are but they are not the smartest. They can be trained to come when called and walk on a harness and leash (things my dog can't even do). However, I have seen them get confused on how I got out of their run, so they have tried to fly THROUGH the fence. They will also just stand in thunderstorms. They would rather stand outside and get soaked in the heavy rain and blown by the wind than go inside their coop.

Well I didn't even know it was possible to train them to come when called. I know they come if there is a prospect of food though. As too standing in the rain it is possible that they are hardwired to brave such weather considering their natural environment, which is rain forests of south Asia. Thank you for sharing your experience with chickens!

They're the only animal I know of that is able to live several weeks without a head, meaning their brains aren't really doing anything for them.

That's a good point! They are from rain forests but I have some fluffy chickens who are NOT waterproof so they just end up soaked.
