chess.com pricing

Hi!

Last year I subscribed diamond membership (whole year) and now it's out. I thought to continue diamond year membership but now I don't think it's worth it. Why?

1. Diamond year membership costs double the platinum membership?! And why? Because:

a) Video lessons - not well organised. I won't talk about the content of videos but there is no real option to make custom selection (to remember my favorite videos) or to create a playlist so that I can watch more videos one after another.

b) ChessMentor - There are some interesting stuff in here but... I can "live" without ChessMentor. It's not that big deal..

c) Computer analysis - C'mon.... do you really use it?? In fact, it's about 2500 rating engine so it makes no sense. If we are really interested into analysing our games we would use Rybka, Fritz, ChessMaster etc. This engine is to weak for real analysis.

So, when I summerise video lessons and ChessMentor cannot be the reason that diamond membership costs the double then platinum! It's simply not worth it.

And another thing: This is the only pleace where loyalty worths nothing. In each company where I bought a (high value) subscription or a product next time I had a discount on that same thing! Additional 10-30% discount just because I stayed as their customer. So, i beliave that year diamond members should have additional discount as a loyalty reward if they decide to subscribe to additional year.

One man's opinion. I, personally, believe chess.com is a bargain. You play rated chess every day for less than the entry in 2 OTB tournaments. Where can you get this much activity for $ 99.00? Costs more than that to go to one baseball game or to play one round of golf.

You can play free chess and tournaments at Yahoo for example... but, that's not what i ment. I'm talking about the content that you pay to use. My arguments are not "why is it 99$?" but diamond vs platinum price difference. There are no real arguments why diamond should cost double then platinum regarding what you get in return.

It really depends on whether or not it's worth it to you. I use all 3 of the major "diamond only" benefits that chess.com offers. I've noticed improvement in my game over time (although I cannot say with 100% certainty that that's because of chess.com's features, it's really the only place I "study"). And I've never seen such a discount as you mention anywhere except if you go to cancel your membership.

I think that $14/mo for diamond is ridiculous, but $99/year? that's just over $8/mo. I spend more money than that on junk food and BS that I don't really need anyway, and this is fun for me. Do I wish it were cheaper? Sure, but... for me it seems a fair price.

I agree with Cry_Wolf. As long as you use the services (mentor and videos), then $99/year is worth it. Extra cost for Diamond membership probably justified by cost of videos (creation and server space etc).

$99 a year is easily worth it.  But, there are some quality complaints here:

the videos NEED a playlist engine and/or a way to 'save' favorites for repeat watching.  The filters are fine, now finish the job with the proper tools.

Chess TV is really nice and should be used more/better.

Chess Mentor rocks.  I have no complaints.

I do wish the analysis were better.  But, it's not bad...just not super.
