CRYING in the Playing Hall-WTF?

Sort:

I am still upset at what happened in the playing hall a month ago. We were the last game of the round. I had five minutes, and my opponent thirty seconds. Then suddenly, i hears CRYING from both ends of the hall! Probably from little kids who lost on time. I could not concentrate, as crying from multiple kids filled the hall!!! I played blindly for the next five moves and let my opponent build a fortress! I had very favorable knight vs ghost bishop ending and was trying to grind. But I am upset! Half complaint, half story.

???

HolographWars

I was the last game in the round.

I had a student once that was very...lets just say..."sensitive"  He would cry after a loss, and jump with joy after a win. His mom asked me about taking him to a tournament in the Bay Area?  I said NO, unless you want to scar him for life.  She didnt listen, he went, got crushed, and never saw him again at a tournament.

Good kid, just to much of an emotional roller coaster.

HolographWars

Well this is different. The crying legitimately distracted me.

I saw a kid crying after he lost his last round game in a tournament against the guy who got first place. I really enjoyed seeing that because just the previous round that kid had beaten me after I blundered away a bishop thinking I had made a clever sacrifice wink.png

Well, it's not like your opponent couldn't hear it.

In all seriousness, a crying kid is a distraction, but it's a distraction for everyone. I've played in quite a few OTB tournaments, and I can remember several strange distracting incidents, but they're pretty rare. We're all just human, so stuff happens

I was the only one in the hall. Our game was the last one to finish.

You know how tournaments are usually in hotels in ballrooms and such.

Well one time, in the middle of a round, there's suddenly loud music (mostly the bass) coming through the walls or ceiling, or somewhere. It's a wedding reception, and it lasted for over an hour.

I thought about being annoyed, getting mad, but everyone was dealing with the same thing, and there was nothing I could do as a player. Also, as you're noting, preforming well in chess is at least partly about keeping your emotions in check.

They probably didn’t know that there was a game that was still going on.

ALL the games were going on. It was like... 10 minutes after the round started.

In my situation.

Oh.

I've seen various versions of this... like a pissed off player stopping the clock, marching up to the TD and asking/shouting "what the hell is this? Is this the playing hall? Are you going to do something about that? I have a game going on!" etc tongue.png

See the contradiction there? You were not the only one in the hall. Your opponent was there as well.

First of all, I'm not insulting you. Second, you're calling me a patzer?
