A scholar is a person that attends a school, and in the case of scholastic chess, it's specifically Kindergarten thru 12th grade, not college or beyond.
In other words, scholastic chess involves strictly kids! Usually somewhere between 5 and 18.

Here, scholastic chess tournament is usually limited to K-12 grades, sometimes limited to K-8 or K-6 so adults can't participate. Most tournaments also limit player ratings; usually u 1800 at the top section; and many tournaments also create sections based on upper age limit, e.g. K-2, K-12. Generally, there are no real prizes (just trophies and books); so you can never recover your money.
