Java script is ugly and unsafe.
By forcing people to enable java script you make their machines vulnerable to attacks, consume a lot of machine'ss resources(memory and cpu). People often need to kill their browsers. It is digital abuse. Java script should be banned in the web.

Without Javascript, most sites wouldn't work. There has to be some client side scripting capability, especially with something like a chess site.

Without Javascript, most sites wouldn't work. There has to be some client side scripting capability, especially with something like a chess site.
The problem is javascript is code that downloaded and run on clients machines without client's agreement. No one knows what is in this code. It is similar when we download random code from random places and run it whiteout any checks. It is security problem. What is the problem to run only server side code?
Personally i use NoScript addon to allow javascript to be used by only trusted websites. But not everyone doing it.

You're not going to get an interactive chess site where you can play live games without client side scripting.
