We notice you are using an ad blocker.

There are several ways that they can detect that you're running an adblocker and display those messages. They don't spy on you, they kinda just detect how you're viewing their website. It doesn't hog resources. And yes, it's your choice to use an adblocker or not. It's their choice to ask you to support their site. Chess.com is free after all. You're not forced to do anything. It's more than reasonable for them to display ads or such messages when you block ads.

If no spying, how could it be determined if I am using an ad blocker? Detecting cannot be solely on their end. They have to pick up the information from my side. Or maybe I am completely wrong.

Like I said, they can detect how you view their website. They basically run a script that determines whether the ads are displayed and if they aren't, the website will display a message. Sometimes websites hide those messages behind ads, so if the ads aren't displayed you'll see the messages. In neither case are they spying on you or receiving information about you.

I'm thinking there are a massive number of scripts, perhaps seeing if any various other games sites are open with chess being played, scripts to see if you are using some other software and might be a list 200 items long, and so on....and those with DSL and having only 1Mbps download and half that for the upload, CPU running at 100%, makes this site sluggish.

The script runs on the website and you're essentially running the website on your computer. So sure, some resources will be used to run that script, but it's really nothing compared to the resources your browser is already using. These scripts aren't complex, they won't make a difference. If you feel that chess.com is too resource heavy you might want to consider checking out some other chess websites.

In setting up a position in analysis just now, there was about 20 seconds nothing could be done. You think that's normal?

I don't know what kind of computer, browser and other software you are running. So I can't tell whether that's normal or not. If you think chess.com isn't running properly you might want to check out some other websites.

I used to get those "We notice you are using an ad blocker" notices. I retaliated by permanently zapping it with uBlock Origin.
