Ads and scams

Dear Chess.com

I am not a native english speaker, so please pardon my english. I've been a diamond member for almost a year, but now I'm satisfied with my free membership.

I am very disappointed in your policy about ads though. It seems that every ad that appears on the screen is some kind of internet scam linking to sites that contain malware, spyware etc. How can this be? Chess.com is a huge internet community. Is it impossible to run more appropriate ads, ads that if I accidently click them does not store tracking cookies and sometimes even trojan horses in my harddrive?

I love your site and wish you all the best, but it seems quite unprofessional and I think alot of potential chess.com users is scared away by all the scam-ads.

Best regards Samuel

I was considering becoming a paying member but since this poster, as well as others have yet to be addressed on this topic; it shows that in the long run, the administration of this site does not care. I work hard for the reletively small money I earn and will not part with it in the face of what I perceive as disrespect!

I never get these. Maybe your computer has a bug.

Could you provide some examples (some screenshots, perhaps) of the ads?

Nothing could be further from the truth.  Not every one of the innumerable threads gets read by staff -- it's just not feasible.  Many, however, do and I've what I've witnessed has been nothing short of outstanding customer attentiveness and service, especially for an online site with this many users.

Ultiamtely, though, this is why there's a "Help & Support" link at the bottom of each page.  I'm sure if you raised a ticket you'd get immediate attention.  The forums just aren't the right place for raising this kind of issue.

There is an ad on chess.com as well as many other sides concerning "work at home mom, (your city is mentioned), earns $38,438.73 in first year. This advetiser is extremely malicious. It will open an entire new session of Mozilla, not just a new tab, and you can't shut it off. When trying to close it, it asks if you really want to close this window. If you're not too tech savy, and I'm just borderline capable, it WILL take over your browser. I've seen this ad on chess.com before I became a paying member. To get past it, I configured my router to block access to that (and other) url! That's how extreme I had to get to use chess.com. Who's going to do that most of the time?

I whole-heartedly agree with OP - advertising is fine, but it should be tested and filtered, clean advertising. It should not be maleware lurking just an accidental mouse click away from your enjoyment.

For what it's worth, I make my living on eBay, even after taxes.

Eric responded before, explaining the problem is caused because chess.com doesn't do business directly with the companies, but through an ad-network. Therefore, it doesn't know which ads it's going to get.

I personally am hard to offend by adult material, and am very web-safe. However, it still creeps me out when I see the posts about spyware. Some could be caused by people whos computers are already infected, but I doubt that's all of them. I woud appreciate it if chess.com was more pro-active with the middleman, but I guess I shouldn't complain as this is a free service.

Eric needs to do more. Many ad networks enable advertisers to set filters. If the one chess.com is using does not then they should switch. Also Chess.com should be cruising their own site as non-paying members in a purpuseful attempt to sniff out bad ads and then apply appropriate filters. This site should be safe for all users first and foremost! There are other sites to play for free with zero risk, why risk losing marketshare over something this stupid and so serious?

I'm done. My last post on this topic.

we have a REPORT THIS AD link next to every ad. please use this so that we can find and report bad ads.

we are 100% committed to customer service, and to making everyone's experience here pleasant. i'm not sure what would give you a different impression, but i'm sorry you feel that way and we want to make things right.

i assure you that we don't intentionally allow those ads. and we report them to our ad networks immediately when they are reported or found. so please, REPORT the ads when they happen so we can kill them.

(on a side note: some people's computer are infected with malware from other sites that hijack ad spaces on legitimate websites like chess.com and insert their own ads which contain more malware. it is possible that this has happened to you. i recommend a full sweep of your system.)

again, please help us by reporting bad ads and we can get them reported and removed!

thanks,

erik

theirs this ad that shows a girl naked, but i dont think its still their, its been a while since i was here

Under each ad, there is "Report Ad"  which you can use. This sends me the relevant information about an ad on the site thats needed if the ad is to be removed.

If you can't see that 'report ad', if the ad covers your games, prevents you from playing, disables the scroll then please try and get a screenshot of it and email it to me

kohai@chess.com

This also applies to any you feel are malicious, spammy or of an adult nature.

(breaking my previous promise...)

@Conquistador - OOOOHHHHH! I just fell out of my chair. You are the best.

@ERIC & Kohai

- I'm Sorry. This topic does send me spiraling and I have no fuse, just instant bang. I love the sight. You should know, and I swear on the life of my father Domengo Montoyya that this is the absolute truth, that before I became a paying member I was keenly aware of the fact that I was getting a great product for nothing. Felt a bit like stealing. So I made a point of clicking on the ads that appeared. I knew you got paid for such visits and I thought this was a reasonable show of support. However that stopped the minute I saw an ad from the domain "consumernews" or something like it. I joined to put money directly in your pocket and support the good effort, losing the ad risk was a perk but others shouldn't be at such a potential risk. My PC is protected by Norton360  daily updated and scrutinized. It has not been damaged by these sites but reports the attacks.

Please search for and delete any ads from these urls: consumernews; workfromhome; freegiveaway. They hijack your browser at the least.

Love your product!

kohai

He saw them before upgrading.
