Board/Pieces Aesthetics

Hello,

I'm a player concerned with the near-meaningless aesthetics of the chess board and pieces (perhaps I have something of an OCD...). The options on this site for such settings leave me unsatisfied; I usually end up playing with a marble board and classic pieces. This site is sincerely wonderful and comprehensive regarding the actual game itself, but, for me at least, this trifling foible leaves something to be desired. I understand the limitations of a website as opposed to a software or program, so I have no real conviction for a change, but am just curious on the topic. Does anyone else have thoughts on this? I was hoping for something of a gen. discussion on the matter- discuss away.

Actually I've been secretly hoping for more options for board settings as well, so I definitely know what you mean. And even though it is all in one's head, I notice I do play (marginally) better with a "better-looking" board.

Totally agree, I would especially love a fantastic looking 3-D board. Most 3-D options aren't very flattering even from a tactical sight standpoint, and I know I at least prefer a real board. I would think a community like this one would produce a very pleasing option given the chance.

So your idea is basically that there should be a system where people could create their own "board themes" just like is the case with "site themes" now? That's actually a very good idea, I didn't even think of it that way at first.

I rather like "Kingdom".

Also, I agree with Quag. I don't remember exactly, but when I was much younger my dad bought a chess CD for me (early 2000s?). It would be raining and the camera would zoom into a crystal ball or something... But anyway, the game was way too hard for me and I hated the piss out of it- but LOVED the styles of the pieces- I was absolutely fascinated by them. The CG futuristic, brassy, "crashed-spaceship" area's style brought me back to that hellspawn program again and again (I wish I hadn't lost it).

That's about everything I can think of to say. I had wished that this would turn into a much lengthier forum discussion, but am still glad to read at least a few other people agree (and as a last thought, I do suppose only so much can be said other than, "I agree.") It also seems that only good can come from an eventual development of the site's fonts. I really hope this comes around.

That's me in the robe.
