chess in VR

There's a program called Tabletop Simulator that does what you mention. Maybe chess.com could eventually interface with it.

Hi marvin, hi Blarg.
I have HTC Vive too and I push Chess.com to develop such VR interface. It's totally different experience than 2D or not immersive 3D. VR is really suitable for playing chess. I advise you to play "Immersion Chess". You can find it on Steam. Very good feeling and free. Problem : waiting for another player...
Have a good play.

It is the 17/4/2021 and I couldn't agree more, at this point I'm thinking of just creating my own solution to send an opponents moves from chess.com to a opponent on Chess Ultra VR. But even then I would still want all the puzzles and drills etc. VR chess is so cool, and when haptic gloves come, we will be able to feel the pieces too! And there are endless possibilities, you could be playing chess in the desert, or in space, with marble or glass or plastic pieces, the pieces could do crazy attacking animations and whatnot when they are moved.
Literally endless possibilities, and all the current competition lacks in different areas.

Having a vr chess game that interfaces with chess.com would be ideal, the key being that; you can cross play with players on other platforms through the chess.com client.
Chess.com's established roster of members helps to insure you have access to match up with any opponent around the world and join any event as all your inputs are translated to other players regardless of using vr or not.
This is the most crucial aspect Chess.com must adopt if they bring on VR support. Cross platform matching, the foundation for the whole VR experience needs to be built on that priorty. all other aspects come after.
(case in point, i'm already playing chess.com from my browser on the Quest 2. The first step is basically covered in that sense. when I want to play an actual emersive VR chess game, I go on VRchat and join a chess lobby. If these two experiences colide, the perfect chess app would be born.)
This would not be hard. You just create your own VR world website and use the Chess.com API. It's basically like interfacing with a controller, where the "VR pieces" are the controller instead of a smart board. Would take a little thinking but should not be hard at all. After that, coming up with the artwork is the hardest part.

Let's be honest. 99.9999% of the forum posters don't know how to do this.

Would love to play Chess in VR with my Chess.com account. Maybe have a separate rating for it like blitz vs rapid?

Oyun kendiliğinden bitti. Ben terketmişim, ondan dolayı kaybetmişim görünüyor. Oysa öyle değil. Yazılımsal bir sorun var galiba. Chess.com

Super interesting topic, I'm surprised this didn't get more traction! Here are my thoughts.
There is plenty of very simple VR-chess options out there (*) but none of them is attractive enough to put up a VR headset like Meta's Quest2. I mostly end up opening a browser in VR and playing on chess com with a huge screen... (Too bad there's no way to draw arrows!)
Let's think about it for a second though. If you really, really could put on a headset and play chess in VR through chess.com's servers, what would you imagine the experience to be? If you could ask any programmer and get your dream game what would it look like?
Here are some questions I can't really make up my mind on:
- what's the environment? Is it something "classical" like the VR Chess Club app in which you sit in front of 3D rendered board and play in front of the avatar of the other player? Or would it be more "realistic", eg. a big environment where avatar float around (no, you can't get close to the board!) and you can just go and sit with the other player or watch others play?
- what does the analysis look like? here is the best part of chess.com maybe, but how to render it properly in VR? Would you pop up a screen in front of you with the familiar 2D view? Or would you instead prefer to see the arrows on the 3D board? And how to draw arrows?? Would maybe you a particular button on the computer? Would you double-pinch (instead of pinch to grab a piece)?
- how do you move the pieces? would you prefer a sort of laser pointing scheme, like what's with the majority of interactions with 2D elements like menu selections, or would you have it realistic by grabbing the pieces? The latter may be cooler but having the option of the first one would be best as it allows very fast bullet (ie you don't need to move your hands very fast)
So, how would you imagine "being" in chess com if you could?
(*) if anyone wants a list of VR chess games to try PM me

I didnt see any rules that said necroposting was disallowed but sorry if it is. Im wondering if any progress has been made to this idea. I really think that this is a good idea and I want to stay up to date on it

I posted 3 years ago about this. Chess.com could have created an app for Meta quest, SteamVR, WebXR and vision OS. Maybe its not too late but at this point its more likely a solo developer will create a chess VR app that uses your chess.com account. IMO Chess.com should create a WebXR experience, seeing as its compatible with any headset. VRChat's Chess world is free, popular and fun.
