Sounds like your game was disconnected from the live chess server and probably had been the whole time you were waiting. When you look at the game do you see a move by your opponent that wasn't there at the time?

I guess I'm a little confused. You said your opponent didn't move so you went away but the last move was by your opponent. Are you saying you moved something else? If so, then the server never received your move and you opponent was sitting waiting for it.
There is apparently some kind of bug where the client code doesn't correctly register disconnects after moves. Last I saw, developers had been working on improving the client code but I haven't seen any status about that.
Some things you can look into, that may help with some disconnects, are the following links:

Don't know if it will help with this situation or not. I always used to suggest force refreshes if you find yourself waiting too long for a move but I don't know if that is still a good way to do it or not. Or closing out of the tab and getting back into live but I don't know how the abandon code interprets that anymore (I probably should test at some point again).
I was up a rook and my opponent didn't resign, so I didn't feel like the game deserved my full attention anymore, so therefore I was surfing the web, occasionally checking back if my opponent made a move. I checked a few times on move 20, my opponent still didn't move. When I came back another time, it said "Game Abandoned" and my opponent won. My time didn't even go down 20 seconds after my opponent moved. This shouldn't have happened. I don't really care THAT much as I just play casually on this website and serious on another, but I felt like this was really unfair.
