Pieces & Board Contrast

While there are many types of pieces to choose from, there are only a few colors. I prefer large recognizable pieces that contrast with the board, but black & white pieces usually do not contrast with the dark, often grey boards that I use. The Neon pieces with the Overlay board on the Dark background is easy to view, but it would be nice if some of the less-used pieces were dropped for more color options that include neither white or black (Neon would be awesome if the white pieces were neon red or orange). Chess is chess, either way, but when playing on my phone visibility is limited.

Thanks for the feedback! I've been voting for allowing people to upload their own pieces/board images. Hopefully one day we will have that!

Someone should write a template showing how to replace the images using the Stylish plugin.  Other sites make excellent usage of the stylish plugin and you can literally replace the graphics with anything you want.  I would love to do that here, but literally no one has written a style for chess.com, so I have no idea how to do it.  I could read some documentation and figure it out, but for now I just do my playing on other sites where I can use pieces I like.

Herpa-Derp

Thanks for taking the time to read feedback, jdcannon! You and the Tank have a good idea there, and I would definitely take advantage of such a feature. However, not everyone is computer-savvy, and it would be nice if a high-contrast layout option was available by default. Smart phones often offer high-contrast keyboard and text options for people that have poor vision or trouble deciphering colors, and Chess.com should do the same with a chess set, though I will surely enjoy the site either way. Anyway, thanks again!

"some of the less-used pieces" made me laugh.  Which chess pieces do you rarely use in Nepal?

LouStule
Cool idea! You could play with Star Trek, Civil War etc. that would be cool.

oregonpatzer: sorry for being vague. I meant the less-used piece sets. Some of the sets are ugly and the pieces are difficult to distinguish from one another, and I can't imagine who would want to use them, though I'm sure some people do use them, and wouldn't be happy if they were deleted.

Herpa-Derp

I just noticed that the Neon set is white & red using a web browser, and white & green with the app; personally, I'd like a neon set that is green & red, or blue & red. Really I don't care so long as both colors contrast with each other and with a neutral background.

Herpa-Derp

I mean like a high-contrast theme.null

Herpa-Derp

Or Neon, if you'd rather.null

Herpa-Derp

But I like the white and red. I really do appreciate that. And also like the idea of being able to upload our own pieces. Hope that come to be at some point.

Herpa-Derp

Maybe y'all could just find a way to let us change the color and outline of the pieces you already offer.

CheesyPuns

bases pieces + board (or walnut) is the best!!!

Herpa-Derp

Thanks for the recommendation, but your set doesn't contrast well. Why are chess sets almost always so inconsiderate of contrast? White and black pieces on white and black squares. Yeah, that's genius.

The photos in my comments up there are from my Babas set. I often play there just because I like my setup that much better, well, that and the games don't freeze up. But there just isn't anywhere near as many players, the community is small and less active, and, while I use Stockfish to analyze in Babas, I like the Chess.com format much better. Chess.com definitely has its place. It could be so much better, though. They would have Babas totally beat on "pieces and squares" layout if they just let users customize the colors and outlines of squares and pieces already offered.

I think people use software like Photoshop or others that are free like Photopea or Pixlr. Not sure if Chess.com ever posted an official template for the public
