Profanity filter in Live Chess - a suggestion

Would it be possible to enable players to switch the profanity filter on and off in the Game chat?

I know that it sound trivial and/or stupid, but it would actually be very useful for situations where two players wish to converse in a non-english without being shocked like I have been a few weeks ago. I have been playing a guy from Serbia  (and he was kicking my ass) and at one point I tried to say to him "Bas se smijem gledajuci koliko puta je polje d6 branjeno." ("I am just laughing  at how many times the d6 field is defended.") when all of the sudden a message jumped out:

"Quit swearing or you'll be shut into outer space you foul-mouthed bad person!!Yell" (or something like that)

Surprised

So I checked and rechecked my post for english swear words, found none, and then contacted a mod who pointed to me the the problem was the word "puta" which is an insult in spanish (it means "times" in the context of my sentence in croatian). Of course I didn't get banned and we had a chuckle over it, but it would be really nice if I was able to chat in my on language without worrying about such things (just in game chat, of course).

i ja sam imao također svakakvih iskustava sa igračima iz srbije. od vrlo neugodnih situacija do vrlo ugodnih razgovora i razmišljanja.

outer space, hmmm.  that's funny.  of course, i am probably a bad person, too.  with all the languages out that, i have been wondering if things like this happen.

Idukar, nije štos u dečkima iz Srbije (kojih ima svakavih, kao i igrača iz bilo koje druge zemlje) nego u tom da ako ti i ja igramo live chess, i ja kažem rečenicu koja ima riječ "puta" u sebi, onda bi valjda bilo normalnije da se tebi ostavi izbor da li ćeš to doživjeti kao uvredu i prijaviti me, ili nećeš jer smo razgovarali na hrvatskom, gdje ta riječ nije uvreda.

i am not insulted.  of course, i hear people say "roads" fairly often.

Lol. My point exactly. And I bet you that there is a tribe out there in whose language the word "roads" means something bad.

Or even within languages there are plenty of double meanings. I know that Puerto Rican Spanish, a word that means "beetle" in most other parts of the Spanish-speaking world means, uhh, something else.

Hi Mandy!

erik

just so you know, there is no filter between two friends who are playing.

oh, when i tried google translate it seemed like "roads" was the offending word in question.

So, all we need to do is add eachother as friends. Cool, thanks Eric.

Hi Spurgistan!

ivandh

I think the swearing filter should use lots of swearing in its warnings.

^ Oh, hey Saidh

There is nothing more childish, immature, and silly than trying to control other people's choice of language.  It all comes out of backwater, religious zealotry and its time we moved passed such supercillious dreck.

 Surprised

OOhh... You said "dr**k"!!!

I'm reporting you to staff!

ivandh

I am very insulted that he would say that

ivandh

That's one of the cons of filters.

Vulpesvictor

When an elevator moves over here, the electric sign will say "I fart" which roughly translates into "In motion" - linguistic parallels are the best.

Puta has the same meaning in Portuguese. It is like an abreviation of the more formal word "prostituta".

And of course it gets really bad when you get into entirely different language families. For instance, I had a professor named Dr. Wang, who was hard.

Well when someone starts a thread about profanity, what do you expect the chess.com crowd to do?
