Chess.com Championships?

I'm thinking this site needs a prestigious tournament. One that ANYONE can enter; a well-respected, well-advertised, and well-known tournament. It should be an ANNUAL tournament.

I suggest starting a Championship each year; let it open for people to join in late November / early December, and commence it January 1.

As for the format...3 rounds. Depending on how many join (I should expect 800 - 1,200 to join, especially if it is put on the front page of the tournaments and is advertised) decides how many people per group...(11 max) and how many groups there are. Each round lasts 120 days (so that it ends about when the next one begins). Thus for each game players should have about 6-7 days per move (or 60 days to play the game; this is even better!).

The winner receives great recognition. I'm not sure how well this applies itself to LIVE CHESS...but a championship is in need on this site. The next one (which should be run by site head) to be called 2010 Championship.

This idea taken from www.redhotpawn.com. They've been doing the same thing for a few years now and it's a really popular scheme there.

I think that would be cool to have a prestigious tournament with thousands of players, at 2/ days a move. Thousands playing at 3 days a move would take about 2 years to complete.  The only thing that would make it fun would be to eliminate vacation for the tourney.

* anyone signing up knowing no vacation allowed, then there is no excuses.  As far as I see I don't see a whole lot of complaining about no vacation.

The time structure would have to be different. I'm suggesting a structure that gives each player 60 days. Whenever it is their turn, this 60 days counts down towards 0 days. When you move, it does not add on time...This would work out perfectly such that at maximum time, it takes 120 days to finish a game. This even allows for possible vacations to occur...I believe we could put up with them though.

You wouldn't be able to have a day "countdown."  People are always on a different times....

No that's not what I mean. You know how there are current options to have 3 days per move? Each person starts with 3 days to move. Same goes for the tournament. Each player gets 60 days to finish the game, timezone has nothing to effect it. The time counts down immediately once it is their turn and they are not moving.
