How do you like the Chess.com tournaments?

I am in three of them and my first one is close to starting (as it just needs one more registrant). There are only 5 in that one but I am registered for two more of them with a lot more open slots.

What do you think of them? I have never been in any kind of chess tournament whatsoever and this will be a new experience for me. I think it will be fun.

What do you fellow members think about the ones on here? Is it something you like to do often? Do they take too long to complete? Is it something you tried once and said "ehhhhh....I think I will just play live chess and online chess in here".

Just looking for input from those who participate in them or have participated in them.

On a side note -- if any of you find a picture of a battery shaped like a rook then let me know the link so I can swoop down on it and use it for my main pic. Since I just thought of that right this instant...my next stop is google to go looking for it.

I like playing in the tournaments, but I have to admit I don't always follow the results after I'm eliminated.  It's not a sour grapes thing, it's just that I join the tourney as a quick way to add a bunch of games to my list and meet new players!

It's a lot of fun; something else to enjoy on this wonderful site!

Tournaments are the main way I expand my online chess games list, just like SteveM.

They seem to have a lot of merits!! The one I am in that is about to start here shortly has only 5 slots and I checked the other registered players and although it's an open ratings range for entry They all have something like 650+ higher ratings than I do...

I shall be like a rabid bandicoot and make them wish they never ran into me hehe......lol If I get severe spank-age I will let you all know!!!

I very well might be letting you all know!!!

I think they are great fun, I prefer the official tournaments, and I join each of them I can. I'm also in one player made tournament at the moment, my max since I'm not a paying member at the moment.

I've got a job incomming in real life though, so I'll probably become a paying member in 1-2months, then I'll probably join alot more player made tournaments aswell. I hate open ranged tournaments though, playing someone 800 more in rating doesn't give me alot unless he's nice enough to talk me through the game with tips and pointers. Not so that I have a chance of winning against him, but to speed my learning up.

The tournaments are great fun!

hate them couse i cant play on them. too high timeout ratio -.-

hate that

Love them.  In fact it is the main reason I upgraded my account.  I like to have something at stake during a game other than rating points or a win.  It is fun to look at the standings and try to figure out where I may end up based on current games.

well tell you the truth you have got to be patient people use this thing called "vacation time" when they know there gonna lose and then theres the people that use the full time amount of time given to them let say u gotta game going 7 days/move they use 6 days 23 hours to go a move..then u got the people who use there vacation time and just when there vacation time is about to expire your all exicted cause its going down 0hours vacation time...they purchase more! yes ll admit theres not that many people that do it but the ones who do do it are the ones youve got to be patient with..even though u feel like quiting just to get it over with. DONT! THATS WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO DO..other then "those people" i love joining tournaments i love thinking and love winning of course i h8 loseing who doesnt it only motivates me to become better as a chess player ..for example i got this 100 people tourny going on and ive been playing now for about 2 months ahh just take a look at it...

Lines to send in their message box if they are holding up games on purpose to avoid losing by using the vacation tactic:

  • "I find your lack of play disturbing...."
  • "It rubs the bishop on its skin or else it gets the check again...."
  • "One...two....checkmate's coming for you...."

They can keep delaying the end...but they can't change the layout of the board so eventually they will have to give up the ghost. Admittedly though its not a nice tactic to use as it holds up the entire tournament.

I like the tournaments, but a very annoying thing is how long they take to finish. One of them already took 5 months and it's still 1st round with 10 games remaining. I don't understand why people qualified for the next round should wait months and months until already eliminated slowpokes will finish their games. Just start the freaking 2nd round and let these slowpokes fight alone for their 4th or 5th place. That's why I like to organize the tournaments myself - I choose the opening, define the rating range, average speed of playing < 12 hours ( meaning you are allowed if your average speed is < 12 hours, though it's still 3 days per move )  and limit the number of the players to 4. This way I have 1 finished and another 75% complete in the same 5 months.

lol the second one is from the silence of the lambs? The guy says something like that to the woman in the well!

Ah quite true! im playing in several tournaments and i dont find waiting for people to finish games a problem at all! INevitbly if someone is using vacation time to not lose a match i mean what the hell is the point in that! I just play my other games and wait(although i cant recall this ever happening to me). Im a relatively slow player at times but thats usually only in my harder tougher games! In easier games i move a bit faster!  I like to think about my moves a bit sometimes!

tournaments are good, you have to be patient though, check the time per move, if u want quick games then 5-14 day clocks are not for you. If it is speed you are after, check out those tournaments with an average time per move limit and those which dont allow entry from those with high timeouts. I like all forms, sometimes with the longer ones it is a little like meeting an old friend, enjoy and be patient

Now that's a great idea!!!!

I love tournaments. I have met some good people in the tournaments that I have participated in so far and I've also been involved in some great games. I think tournaments add an edge to your play knowing that there is something to play for.

Thematic tournaments are a great way to learn the opening. After playing in the "Marshall attack" tourney I liked one of the variations for White ( I was afraid to play it with White at all before), so I played it on FICS and won 4 games in a row.

So much can be learned here at this site.....

I see this complaint alot. What I find interesting is that when I posted a way to run a tournament without as much waiting time, no one was interested in playing. Of course, if you think the Chess.com tournaments are slow, you'd hate real correspondence tournaments. I'm playing in a USCF correspondence tournament right now, and the time control is 10 moves in 50 days. Mind you, you keep the time you don't use, and the time you use for each move is rounded down to the nearest day. So in one game I have 148 days to make my next two moves (technically, I think there's a rule about using more than 40 days for a single move).

Anyway, if you want a quick tournament, play in my Rat Quad. Or a Gerbil Quad, I'll be staring another one of those next week.
